IELTS vs TOEFL: Which English Exam Should You Take?

The LanguageSkills Team · 6 October 2026

Both IELTS and TOEFL prove your English for universities, visas and jobs worldwide. They test the same skills, but the style is different — and that's what should guide your choice.

The key differences

  • Speaking: IELTS is a face-to-face conversation with a real examiner. TOEFL is spoken into a microphone. Prefer talking to a person? IELTS. Prefer a computer? TOEFL.
  • Style: TOEFL is fully computer-based and academic. IELTS offers Academic and General Training versions (the latter for migration/work).
  • Scoring: IELTS uses bands 0–9; TOEFL uses 0–120.

Which should you choose?

  • Migration (UK, Australia, Canada): IELTS (often General Training) is widely required.
  • US universities: TOEFL is traditionally favoured, though most accept IELTS too.
  • Not sure? Check your specific institution or visa — then pick the format that suits how you work best.
Both exams reward real English ability. Build the skill first; the format is secondary.
