How to Pass the Goethe-Zertifikat B1: A Complete 2026 Guide

The LanguageSkills Team · 6 October 2026

The Goethe-Zertifikat B1 is one of the most widely recognised proofs of intermediate German — accepted for many visas, jobs and university applications. The good news: it's very passable with the right preparation. Here's exactly what to expect and how to get ready.

The exam format

The B1 exam has four modules, which you can often take together or separately:

  • Lesen (Reading) — around 65 minutes: understand everyday texts, ads, emails and opinions.
  • Hören (Listening) — around 40 minutes: announcements, conversations and short talks.
  • Schreiben (Writing) — around 60 minutes: a personal message, a forum post, and a semi-formal message.
  • Sprechen (Speaking) — around 15 minutes, usually with a partner: plan something together and give a short presentation.

How it's scored

Each module is worth 100 points, and you need 60 points to pass each one. Because the modules are independent, you can retake just the one you didn't pass — a big advantage if you plan your preparation module by module.

A realistic study plan

  • Weeks 1–4: solidify your B1 grammar — the Perfekt and Präteritum, modal verbs, connectors (weil, dass, wenn), and adjective endings. Build topic vocabulary (work, health, travel, media).
  • Weeks 5–8: practise each module with real exam-style tasks. Time yourself. Learn the writing templates for messages and forum posts.
  • Weeks 9–10: full mock exams under timed conditions, then target your weakest module.

Where most candidates lose points

  • Writing: not answering every bullet point, or forgetting a greeting and sign-off. Follow the task exactly.
  • Speaking: going silent instead of paraphrasing. Examiners reward communication, not perfection — keep talking.
  • Listening: panicking after one missed word. Let it go and catch the next answer.
At B1, communication beats perfection. The candidates who keep going — and keep speaking — pass.
