telc Deutsch B1: Exam Format and How to Prepare

The LanguageSkills Team · 6 October 2026

The telc Deutsch B1 is a widely recognised proof of your German — useful for study, work and visas. With focused preparation, it's very passable. Here's what to expect and how to get ready.

The exam format

  • Written exam — reading, language elements, listening
  • Writing — a semi-formal letter
  • Speaking — usually with a partner: getting to know each other, discussing and planning

How to prepare

Build B1 German — the Perfekt and Präteritum, modal verbs, connectors (weil, dass, wenn) and adjective endings — plus topic vocabulary. Learn the letter-writing template and practise the partner speaking task.

Tips that make the difference

  • Written and oral parts are scored separately — both must pass.
  • Master the letter template: greeting, body points, sign-off.
  • In speaking, keep the conversation going and react to your partner.
  • telc B1 is widely accepted for work and residence in Germany.
Communication beats perfection. Candidates who keep going — and keep speaking — pass.
