If you only sit one German exam before working on a German ward, make it this one. telc Deutsch B2 Pflege is the only widely accepted B2 certificate whose content is the job: a Pflegebericht to write, a case to present orally, dialogues with patients and relatives and doctors. Pass it and you have proven the one thing your Stationsleitung cares about on day one.

Most state authorities accept any B2 German certificate for Anerkennung, but accepting it and benefiting from it are different things. A Goethe B2 pass clears the bureaucracy and leaves you underprepared for the floor. telc B2 Pflege clears the bureaucracy and doubles as the first realistic rehearsal of the work. This guide walks through the exam section by section, flags the one section nobody studies for until the week before, and gives you a 4–6 month prep timeline from a solid B1 base.

Why this exam and not Goethe B2

Goethe B2 is a general-purpose B2 certificate. Its oral section asks you to discuss cultural themes and present a position on a current issue. Its writing section asks you to draft a formal letter — typically about a consumer complaint, a travel plan, a workplace scenario from the service economy. None of it rehearses the Pflegebericht, the oral case presentation, or the family phone call. You can pass Goethe B2 and still freeze on your first Übergabe.

telc B2 Pflege is built for Pflegekräfte. The listening tracks are handovers. The reading passages are patient notes and procedural texts. The writing task is a Pflegebericht. The oral is a case presentation plus a three-way dialogue. Every hour of prep is an hour of job rehearsal. The written exam — three sections, two hours ten

Leseverstehen

Three or four texts drawn from the Pflege world: an information leaflet for patients, an extract from a care plan, a legal or ethical scenario summary. Items test fast comprehension of Fachsprache. The trap is time — the texts aren't hard, but reading them in Fachsprache under time pressure is slower than reading general B2 texts. Drill with real Pflege-Fachliteratur, not with general B2 prep books.

Hörverstehen

The listening section is a shock on first attempt. Real-speed handovers in a mix of regional accents, with ambient noise mixed in. One of the test's three or four audio items is often a telephone call between a nurse and a doctor; another is a handover; another a patient complaint. Your preparation must include listening at 1.25× speed to normal-speed podcasts. If you have only trained on textbook audio, you will fail this section first.

Schreiben — the Pflegebericht

You get a scenario, usually a page of information about a patient and a shift, and must produce a formal Pflegebericht in standard nursing documentation style. Marked on content coverage, Fachsprache accuracy, and documentation register. Three sentence patterns handle most of the writing load — the objective observation, the measured value + action, and the quoted patient complaint + response. The key action verbs piece is the vocabulary core for this section.

The oral exam — the one most candidates underestimate

Twenty minutes total, two parts. First, a short case presentation (Fallvorstellung) based on prepared information. Second, a three-way simulation: you plus one or two examiners playing a patient, a relative, or a colleague. The Fallvorstellung is the section nobody studies for properly. Candidates arrive thinking they will "just talk about the patient"; the examiners want structured delivery with Perfekt Passiv, Nominalstil, and a clear clinical reasoning chain, in under three minutes. Prepare it like a short speech. Rehearse it to the point of muscle memory.

The three-minute Fallvorstellung · structure

Vorstellung — Herr X, Alter, Diagnose, Tag der Aufnahme / postoperativ.

Verlauf — Was wurde heute gemacht, in Perfekt Passiv. Vitalzeichen. Besonderheiten.

Pflegeprobleme — Zwei bis drei konkrete Probleme, mit Pflegefachsprache.

Empfehlung — Nächste Schritte, in Konjunktiv II: "Ich würde empfehlen …"

This is the shape your examiner is listening for. Not a conversational summary. A structured, four-block delivery, in professional register.

Scoring and pass thresholds

telc B2 Pflege is scored module by module. The written and oral parts must each be passed independently; a strong written score does not compensate for a failed oral and vice versa. If you only miss on one module, telc permits re-sitting the failed module alone — much cheaper than a full retake. The exact scaling and threshold are confirmed on the exam-day scoring sheet; verify current numbers with your Prüfungszentrum.

A 4–6 month timeline from solid B1

  • Month 1–2. Vocabulary (the 500 Pflegedeutsch words, in clusters), Perfekt Passiv, nominal register. One Pflegebericht written per week, graded.
  • Month 3–4. Listening speed drills (podcasts at 1×, then 1.25×). Reading drills on real Fachtexte. Three Fallvorstellungen per week, recorded and self-reviewed.
  • Month 5. First full mock. Identify the weakest module. Spend the final weeks there, not across all four.
  • Month 6. Second mock. Book the exam if your scores are at pass threshold on all modules; delay by one month if not. A failed sitting costs more than a one-month delay.

Common mistakes that cost marks

  • Fallvorstellung without structure. Candidates speak conversationally for three minutes and run out of time before they get to the recommendation. Use the four-block template above.
  • Writing the Pflegebericht in long sentences. Clinical documentation style is short. Nominal. Factual. Long explanatory sentences lose marks on register.
  • Over-formal patient dialogue. When the simulation shifts to a patient, candidates stay in Fachsprache. The patient doesn't understand "Flüssigkeitsbilanz negativ." Drop into Alltagssprache for that turn, then shift back.
  • Under-prepared listening. If you've only listened to studio audio, the real-speed handover will blow past you. Shadow native-speed Pflegedeutsch podcasts in the final two months.
