Italian Articles Explained: il, lo, la, i, gli, le

The LanguageSkills Team · 6 October 2026

Italian has several words for "the" where English has one. It looks fiddly, but the choice follows clear rules about gender, number and the sound that starts the next word.

Singular articles

  • il — masculine, before most consonants: il libro.
  • lo — masculine, before s+consonant, z, gn, ps, y: lo studente, lo zaino.
  • la — feminine, before consonants: la casa.
  • l' — masculine or feminine, before a vowel: l'amico, l'amica.

Plural articles

  • i — plural of il: i libri.
  • gli — plural of lo and l' (masculine): gli studenti, gli amici.
  • le — plural feminine: le case, le amiche.

The trick: listen to the next sound

Italian chooses articles partly to make speech flow. If the next word starts with a vowel or an awkward cluster, the article adapts. Learn each noun with its article and the patterns sink in.

Don't memorise nouns alone — memorise "il libro", "la casa", "lo zaino". The article comes free with the word.
