How to Pass the JLPT N5: A Complete Beginner's Guide

The LanguageSkills Team · 6 October 2026

The JLPT N5 is a widely recognised proof of your Japanese — useful for study, work and visas. With focused preparation, it's very passable. Here's what to expect and how to get ready.

The exam format

  • Language Knowledge — vocabulary and kanji
  • Language Knowledge — grammar and reading
  • Listening — short everyday exchanges

How to prepare

Master hiragana and katakana completely, learn the ~100 N5 kanji and core vocabulary, and the basic grammar patterns (です/ます, particles, adjectives). Do plenty of timed listening.

Tips that make the difference

  • There's no speaking or writing section — it's recognition-based.
  • Listening is often the deciding section; practise it daily.
  • Learn kanji with readings and example words, not in isolation.
  • You need roughly 80/180 overall, with a minimum per section.
Communication beats perfection. Candidates who keep going — and keep speaking — pass.
