How to Pass HSK 3: A Complete Guide

The LanguageSkills Team · 6 October 2026

The HSK 3 is a widely recognised proof of your Chinese — useful for study, work and visas. With focused preparation, it's very passable. Here's what to expect and how to get ready.

The exam format

  • Listening (听力) — conversations and short passages
  • Reading (阅读) — matching and comprehension
  • Writing (书写) — arranging words and writing characters

How to prepare

Reach ~600 words and the associated characters, master the HSK 3 grammar (complements, 把, comparisons), and practise writing characters by hand for the writing section. Do timed listening regularly.

Tips that make the difference

  • HSK 3 is the first level with a real writing section — practise handwriting.
  • You need 180/300 to pass (60 per section target).
  • Learn characters with their pinyin and tones together.
  • Review measure words and the 把 construction.
Communication beats perfection. Candidates who keep going — and keep speaking — pass.
