German for Language Support in Schools (Sprachfoerderung): Teaching German to Multilingual Children

Language support is one of the fastest-growing parts of the German education sector, and the reason is arithmetic. Roughly a quarter of children in German schools grow up in households where a language other than German is spoken. Since 2013 the federal states have expanded language support for children before school, and most now assess every child's German in the year before they start.

The professional vocabulary of this field mixes pedagogy with linguistics, and it is distinctive because German practice treats a child's first language as an asset rather than an obstacle.

The Concepts

German termEnglish meaning
die Sprachförderunglanguage support
die alltagsintegrierte Sprachbildunglanguage learning built into the day
die Mehrsprachigkeitmultilingualism
die Erstsprachethe first language
die Bildungsspracheacademic language
die Alltagsspracheeveryday language
Deutsch als ZweitspracheGerman as a second language, DaZ
die Spracherwerbsphasethe language acquisition phase

The distinction between Alltagssprache and Bildungssprache is the key idea in the field. A child can chat fluently in the playground and still fail to follow a science lesson, because school language uses longer sentences, passive constructions and technical vocabulary that nobody speaks at home.

Assessment Before School

German termEnglish meaning
die Sprachstandserhebungthe pre-school language assessment
das Screeningverfahrenthe screening instrument
die Feststellung des Sprachstandsthe determination of language level
die Förderempfehlungthe recommendation for support
die verpflichtende Sprachförderungcompulsory language support
das letzte Kindergartenjahrthe final nursery year
die Schulanmeldungthe school registration
die Rückstellungdeferring school entry

In most federal states the assessment happens in the final Kita year, and where support is needed it may be a requirement rather than an offer. In some states a child whose German is not yet sufficient can have school entry deferred.

How Support Is Delivered

German termEnglish meaning
die Sprachförderkraftthe language support teacher
die Kleingruppethe small group
das Sprachspielthe language game
die Wortschatzarbeitvocabulary work
die Satzmusterübungsentence pattern practice
das Erzähltheaterthe storytelling board
die Bildkartethe picture card
die Handpuppethe hand puppet

Support is normally delivered inside the ordinary day rather than in a separate room, which is what alltagsintegriert means. The materials named above are the standard kit, and knowing them by name is useful in the first week of a placement.

Working with Multilingual Children

German termEnglish meaning
die Sprachmischungmixing languages within a sentence
die Interferenzinterference between languages
die Schweigephasethe silent phase
die Umgebungssprachethe language of the environment
die Herkunftssprachethe heritage language
das Sprachvorbildthe language model
die Wertschätzungvaluing what the child brings
der Übergangthe transition into school

The Schweigephase is the period in which a child in a new language environment speaks very little, and treating it as a problem is the classic mistake. It is a normal stage, and the vocabulary exists precisely so that it can be explained calmly to parents.

Materials, Games and the Words for Them

German termEnglish meaning
das Sprachförderspielthe language support game
die Reimkartethe rhyming card
die Erzählkartethe story card
der Erzählkreisthe storytelling circle
das Kamishibaithe picture-card theatre
die Lauttabellethe sound chart
die Silbenübungthe syllable exercise
die Bewegungseinheitthe movement session

Language support in German schools leans heavily on material that makes speaking necessary rather than optional, and the Kamishibai, the wooden picture-card theatre, is among the most widely used. Naming the materials correctly starts to matter the moment you share a room with a colleague.

Qualifications and Routes In

German termEnglish meaning
die Zusatzqualifikationthe additional qualification
die Fortbildungthe further training
die DaZ-Fortbildungthe German-as-a-second-language course
die Sprachlernberatunglanguage learning advice
die Hospitationthe observation visit
die Praxisbegleitungpractice mentoring
die Kooperationcooperation between Kita and school
der Bildungsträgerthe training provider

Further training is usually taken while working, often as a series of modules rather than one qualification, and many providers run it in house. A Hospitation in a well-run Sprachförderung group is the fastest way to see what alltagsintegriert actually looks like.

Reading, Writing and the Transition to School

German termEnglish meaning
die Vorlesesituationthe shared reading moment
die Schreibmotivationthe motivation to write
die Buchstabeneinführungthe introduction of letters
die Lesefertigkeitreading ability
das Textverständniscomprehension of a text
die Erzählkompetenzstorytelling ability
die Schreibwerkstattthe writing workshop
die Übergangsbegleitungsupport through the transition

Reading and writing belong to the school years, but the groundwork is oral, and German practice calls the bridge the Übergang. A child who can retell a story in sequence in the Kita year arrives at school with the structure that reading comprehension is built on, which is why Erzählkompetenz is assessed early.

Legal Framework and Funding

German termEnglish meaning
die Kindergartenpflichtcompulsory nursery attendance in some states
der Rechtsanspruchthe legal entitlement to a place
das KiTa-Qualitätsgesetzthe national quality funding act
die Landesförderungthe state funding
das Sprachförderkonzeptthe language support concept
die Erhebungthe data collection
die Auswertungthe evaluation of the funding
die Sprachstandsfeststellungthe determination of language level

Federal money has been channelled into Kita quality through a series of acts, with language support named among the funded priorities, and each state reports on what it did with its share. The vocabulary of funding is therefore part of the vocabulary of the job, whether or not you ever write such a report yourself.

Talking to Parents

German phraseWhat it does
"Ihre Sprache zu Hause ist ein Vorteil."states the principle first
"Wie sprechen Sie zu Hause mit Ihrem Kind?"asks without judging
"Wir üben hier jeden Tag, ohne Extraunterricht."explains the method
"Ihr Kind braucht Zeit, das ist normal."removes alarm
"Wir zeigen Ihnen, wie Sie zu Hause unterstützen können."offers a role
"Was beobachten Sie zu Hause?"treats the parent as the expert

The third sentence answers the question nearly every parent asks, which is when the extra lessons start, and it gives a better answer than the literal one.

Working in Language Support

Roles exist in Kitas, in primary schools and in the Sprachheilschulen, and they are filled by Erzieher with additional training, by teachers with a DaZ qualification and by the growing group of Sprachförderkräfte employed through local programmes. Multilingual applicants have a genuine advantage here, because they have lived the process they are supporting.

If you want to learn German for this work, aim for the register of the classroom rather than the register of the office, because the job is done in short sentences addressed to children who are listening very carefully.

The bars show the order of the process; support continues through the transition rather than ending at school entry.

The Longer View

Language support is one of the few educational roles where results are visible within a year, and where progress is measured in sentences a child can suddenly produce. For a newcomer to Germany it is also a field in which their own experience of learning the language counts as a qualification rather than as a gap. If you want to learn German for language support, the classroom register matters more than advanced grammar.

Language support is done in short sentences, all day. Learn German with classroom register, DaZ vocabulary and parent-conversation language built in.
