German for Elderly Care (Altenpflege): The Daily Routine Vocabulary You Use Every Shift

Elderly care is one of the largest employers in German social services, and almost all of the work is routine. Around five million people in Germany are officially recognised as pflegebedürftig, and about four in five of them live at home rather than in a care home. The daily language of the job is therefore not medical vocabulary but the plain verbs of daily living.

The encouraging part for anyone learning German for the sector is how narrow that vocabulary turns out to be. The same twenty actions repeat every shift, in a predictable order. This article groups them the way a morning round actually runs, so you can rehearse a whole shift in one sitting.

The Four Areas of Daily Living

German care planning organises daily living into four areas, and the formal names appear in every care plan. Learn them first, because the plan is written in them even when the floor uses plainer words.

German termEnglish meaning
die Körperpflegepersonal hygiene
die Nahrungsaufnahmefood intake
die Mobilitätmobility
die Ausscheidungcontinence
die Grundpflegebasic care
die Behandlungspflegedelegated medical treatment
die Tagesstrukturthe daily routine
die Pflegeplanungthe care plan

Two of these need separating from the start. Grundpflege is washing, dressing and eating, the care any trained worker gives. Behandlungspflege covers medical tasks such as insulin or a wound dressing, and in Germany those are delegated by a doctor or a registered nurse. Using the wrong term in a handover can misstate what you are qualified to do.

The Verbs of an Ordinary Shift

Noun lists pass exams; verbs get you through a shift. These ten cover most of the physical work of a morning round.

German verbEnglish meaning
weckento wake
waschento wash
duschento shower
anziehento dress
umlagernto reposition
mobilisierento mobilise
transferierento transfer, bed to chair
begleitento accompany
verabreichento administer
dokumentierento record

Umlagern and mobilisieren are the two you will use most. Umlagern belongs with Dekubitusprophylaxe, pressure-sore prevention, and German care standards expect a documented repositioning interval. Mobilisieren belongs with Sturzprophylaxe, fall prevention, which is why a care plan always states how far someone can walk and with what help.

Night Shifts and the Small Hours

Night duty has its own short vocabulary, and it is almost entirely about checks that have to be recorded.

German termEnglish meaning
die Nachtschichtthe night shift
der Kontrollgangthe round of checks
die Schlafkontrollethe sleep check
die Lagerungskontrollethe repositioning check
die Rufanlagethe call system
der Nachtdienstthe night duty itself

A night round is written as a series of completed checks rather than as a story, and the word Kontrolle appears in almost every line. "23:40 Uhr Kontrollgang, Frau K. schlafend angetroffen" is a small piece of language skill that makes a large difference on nights.

Washing, Dressing and Dignity

Personal hygiene is the part of the job where language and dignity meet, and German has a set of softening phrases that experienced staff use automatically. If you want to learn German for this work, these are the first sentences worth rehearsing.

German phraseWhat it does
"Darf ich Ihnen beim Waschen helfen?"asks before helping
"Ich helfe Ihnen gleich beim Anziehen."announces the next step
"Sagen Sie mir bitte, wenn es unangenehm ist."invites a stop signal
"Ich lasse Ihnen kurz Zeit für sich."gives privacy
"Ist Ihnen das recht so?"checks consent

The pattern is constant: announce, ask, then act. German care training calls it die Mitwirkung, the resident's participation, and a plan will usually record how much independence is expected in each area. Being allowed to wash yourself when you still can is a right rather than a kindness.

Meals, Textures and Swallowing

Nutrition is where the vocabulary gets unusually precise, because a mistake has consequences.

German termEnglish meaning
die Vollkostnormal diet
die weiche Kostsoft diet
die pürierte Kostpureed diet
die Schluckstörungdifficulty swallowing
die Kostformthe prescribed diet
das Trinkprotokollfluid intake record
die PEG-Sondefeeding tube
die Mangelernährungmalnutrition

The practical rule is to use the word from the plan rather than a description. "Herr Weber bekommt weiche Kost" tells the next shift exactly what to serve, and it takes fewer words than explaining it. If you want to learn German with this vocabulary built into a course, the care plan is the best textbook you will find.

Handover and Documentation

German care documentation is written in short, factual sentences and in the third person. Die Pflegedokumentation is the record, der Bericht the entry, and die Abweichung the deviation from the plan. The expected shape is: what was observed, what was done, what changed.

The handover at the end of a shift is spoken rather than read, and it follows the same order. Die Übergabe covers who is new, who has changed, what is unresolved, and what the next shift must watch. One clear sentence beats a long rough one, and the colleague taking over will thank you for it.

Roughly four in five people receiving German care insurance benefits are cared for at home, which is why home-based vocabulary matters as much as ward vocabulary.

Where the Jobs Are

Care homes, home-care services, assisted-living schemes and day centres all hire continuously, and the sector recruits heavily from abroad. The German qualification is the generalist Pflegefachfrau or Pflegefachmann, introduced in 2020, which replaced the separate elderly-care training with a single three-year programme. Foreign qualifications are assessed under the Recognition Act.

Interviews are practical rather than academic. You will be asked to describe a morning round, to explain how you would react to a fall, and to say what you would record afterwards. Describing those in the vocabulary above, in the right order, is very nearly the whole interview.

Daily care is a routine you can rehearse. Learn German with washing, mobilising and handover phrases built into the course.
