German for School Social Work (Schulsozialarbeit): Pupils, Parents and Teachers

Schulsozialarbeit sits inside a German school but is not part of it. The post is usually funded through youth welfare law rather than education law, which means the person holding it works for a Träger, answers to a supervisor outside the school, and nevertheless spends the day in the staff room. That double position generates most of the vocabulary of the role.

Schulsozialarbeit exists in every federal state, but the legal basis and the funding differ, which is why a job advert will name both the school and the Jugendamt or the freie Träger that employs you. Understanding who your employer actually is forms part of the interview.

The Role and Its Position

German termEnglish meaning
die Schulsozialarbeitschool social work
der Trägerthe employing organisation
die Schulleitungthe school management
das Kollegiumthe teaching staff
die Klassenkonferenzthe class conference
die Schulordnungthe school rules
die Erziehungsberechtigtenthe legal guardians
die Schweigepflichtthe duty of confidentiality

The Schweigepflicht binds you as a social worker even though it does not bind the teachers beside you, and stating that difference clearly at the start of a placement prevents most later misunderstanding.

Counselling a Pupil

German termEnglish meaning
das Einzelgesprächthe one-to-one conversation
die Beratungthe counselling session
die Vertraulichkeitconfidentiality
die Grenze der Vertraulichkeitthe limit of confidentiality
die Kindeswohlgefährdungendangerment of a child's welfare
die Meldungthe report to the youth office
die Begleitungaccompanying a pupil over time
die Vereinbarungthe agreement reached

The Grenze der Vertraulichkeit is explained in the first session rather than the last, because it is the point at which a pupil needs to know that some things cannot stay between the two of you.

The Legal Duty You Cannot Decline

German termEnglish meaning
das Jugendamtthe local youth welfare office
der Schutzauftragthe duty to protect
die Gefährdungseinschätzungthe risk assessment
die insoweit erfahrene Fachkraftthe qualified adviser on child protection
der Hausbesuchthe home visit
das Hilfeplangesprächthe help-plan meeting
die Inobhutnahmetaking a child into emergency care
die Dokumentationthe record

Section 8a of the eighth social code requires anybody working with children under a public contract to assess risk and, where necessary, involve the youth office. The phrase insoweit erfahrene Fachkraft is the one to learn properly, because it names the colleague you must consult before acting alone.

School Attendance and Its Vocabulary

German termEnglish meaning
der Schulabsentismusschool absenteeism
das unentschuldigte Fehlenunexplained absence
die Schulpflichtcompulsory schooling
die Ordnungsmaßnahmethe formal sanction
das Bußgeldthe fine imposed on parents
die Rückführungreturning a pupil to school
die Kooperation mit der Schulecooperation with the school
die Anwesenheitslistethe attendance list

Compulsory schooling in Germany is a legal duty on the parents rather than a choice, and persistent absence can lead to fines and, in the last resort, to a court procedure. Explaining that to a family without sounding like a threat is a language skill as much as a legal one.

Projects and Prevention Work

German termEnglish meaning
die Projektarbeitproject work
die Präventionswochethe prevention week
die Streitschlichterausbildungtraining pupils as mediators
die Sozialkompetenzsocial competence
die Suchtpräventionaddiction prevention
die Medienkompetenzmedia literacy
der Klassenratthe class council
die Auswertungthe evaluation of the project

Much of the role is group work rather than individual counselling: a mediation programme, a week on social media, a class council that meets every Friday. In German schools these are simply called Projekte, and a Schulsozialarbeiter who can run one is worth more to a school than one who only waits in an office.

Recording and Confidentiality in a School

German termEnglish meaning
die Fallaktethe case file
die Aufbewahrungthe storage of records
die Löschfristthe deletion deadline
die Einwilligung der Elternparental consent
der Datenschutzdata protection
die Weitergabepassing information on
die Beratungsdokumentationthe counselling record
die anonymisierte Fallbesprechungthe anonymised case discussion

Records of a counselling conversation belong to the social worker rather than to the school, and German data protection rules set limits on what may be passed to teachers. Explaining that boundary politely, in a staff room where everybody assumes otherwise, is a recurring task.

Working with the School as an Organisation

German termEnglish meaning
der Schulleiterthe head teacher
die Schulkonferenzthe whole-school committee
das Schulprogrammthe school development plan
die Steuergruppethe steering group
die Schulentwicklungschool development
die Netzwerkarbeitnetwork building
die Kooperationsvereinbarungthe cooperation agreement
die Präsenzzeitthe required hours on site

The cooperation agreement between school and Träger is worth reading in your first week, because it sets out who the social worker reports to and what the school may ask for. Most disputes in this role turn out to be disputes about that document, so the vocabulary in it is the vocabulary you will need in a meeting.

Self-Care and Boundaries

German termEnglish meaning
die Belastungthe strain of the work
die Abgrenzungmaintaining boundaries
die Supervisionprofessional supervision
die kollegiale Beratungpeer consultation
die Fallbesprechung im Teamthe team case discussion
die Dienstvereinbarungthe service agreement
der Vertretungsfallthe cover arrangement
die Fürsorgepflicht des Trägersthe employer's duty of care

The Träger owes you a Vertretungsfall, a named colleague who covers when you are absent, and a supervision arrangement. Asking about both at interview is normal in Germany rather than an admission of fragility, and the words for them signal that you have worked in the field before.

Talking to Parents and Teachers

German phraseWhat it does
"Ich möchte mit Ihnen über die Schule sprechen."opens without blame
"Was fällt Ihnen zu Hause auf?"asks for the family's view
"Wie können wir das gemeinsam angehen?"builds an agreement
"Das kann ich Ihnen nicht sagen, das unterliegt der Schweigepflicht."states a limit
"Ich melde mich am Freitag bei Ihnen."commits precisely
"Das bleibt unter uns, außer es geht um Sicherheit."sets the boundary

The fourth phrase protects a pupil and annoys a teacher in equal measure, and it is worth rehearsing until it can be said warmly rather than defensively.

Getting into the Field

The qualification is normally a degree in Soziale Arbeit, and employers usually expect experience with young people. Because the post is created by the youth office, the interview may be held by the Träger rather than by the school.

You will be asked what you would do with a fourteen-year-old who tells you something serious and then asks you not to pass it on. The expected answer distinguishes carefully between confidentiality and safety, and explains the boundary in words the pupil can actually understand. If you want to learn German for social work in a school, this is the conversation to rehearse first.

The bars show the sequence required by section 8a of the eighth social code; the values are step numbers rather than timeframes.

Why This Role Is Growing

Every federal state has expanded Schulsozialarbeit over the last decade, and the post is now standard in most secondary schools. For a social worker moving to Germany it is one of the few roles where an outside perspective is treated as an asset rather than as a gap. If you want to learn German for school social work, learn the section 8a wording as a fixed formula.

School social work is a legal role as well as a pastoral one. Learn German with the section 8a procedure and counselling vocabulary built into the course.
