How to Pass TOPIK I: A Complete Beginner's Guide

The LanguageSkills Team · 6 October 2026

The TOPIK I is a widely recognised proof of your Korean — useful for study, work and visas. With focused preparation, it's very passable. Here's what to expect and how to get ready.

The exam format

  • Listening (듣기) — short dialogues and announcements
  • Reading (읽기) — notices, messages and short texts

How to prepare

Be fully fluent in reading Hangul, build beginner vocabulary and grammar (particles, polite endings, past/present), and practise timed reading and listening. TOPIK I has no writing or speaking section.

Tips that make the difference

  • Your total score places you in Level 1 or Level 2 — there's no pass/fail.
  • Speed matters: practise reading under time pressure.
  • Learn vocabulary in themed sets (shopping, transport, daily life).
  • Hangul fluency is non-negotiable — drill it first.
Communication beats perfection. Candidates who keep going — and keep speaking — pass.
