How to Learn Spanish from Scratch: A Beginner's Guide (2026)

The LanguageSkills Team · 6 October 2026

Here's good news for beginners: Spanish is one of the friendliest languages to start. The spelling is phonetic, the sounds are clear, and you can build real sentences within days. This is your plan from zero.

Pronunciation: easier than you think

Spanish is read almost exactly as it's written. Master the five pure vowels, the rolled rr, and the soft j/g sound, and you can pronounce nearly any word on sight. Read aloud from day one.

Your first words

Begin with greetings (hola, buenos días, adiós), the essentials (sí, no, gracias, por favor, perdón), numbers, and core verbs: ser and estar (to be), tener (to have), ir, hacer, querer. Practise them in short phrases: Quiero un café, por favor.

The grammar to focus on first

  • Ser vs estar — the two "to be" verbs, the classic beginner puzzle.
  • Gender and articles (el, la, un, una).
  • Present tense of regular and a few irregular verbs.
  • Questions — ¿Qué? ¿Dónde? ¿Cuándo? ¿Por qué?

The subjunctive and the past tenses come a little later — don't let them scare you off starting.

A realistic roadmap

A1 in 6–10 weeks, A2 over a few months, then B1 and B2 for genuine fluency. With 500 million speakers worldwide, every level opens doors for travel, work and connection.

Consistency beats intensity. Fifteen honest minutes a day will take you further than you expect.
