Mandarin Chinese is spoken by over a billion people and opens huge doors in trade, tech and travel. The script looks daunting — but with pinyin and tones first, and characters introduced slowly, Mandarin is very learnable.
Start with pinyin and tones
Pinyin spells Mandarin sounds in the Latin alphabet, so you can speak before you can read characters. The four tones are the real beginner skill — practise them from day one, because tone changes meaning (mā, má, mǎ, mà).
Your first words
Begin with greetings (你好 nǐ hǎo, 谢谢 xièxie, 再见 zàijiàn) and simple sentence patterns. Chinese grammar is refreshingly simple — no verb conjugations, no plurals, no gender.
The grammar that matters first
- Basic word order — subject, verb, object (just like English).
- Measure words (classifiers) like 个 gè.
- The particle 了 (le) for completed actions.
- Questions with 吗 (ma) and question words.
Characters, step by step
You don't need thousands of characters to start speaking. Learn them gradually alongside pinyin, a handful at a time, and reading grows naturally.
Tones first, characters slowly, speaking from day one — that's the Mandarin shortcut.
