How to Learn Italian from Scratch: A Beginner's Guide (2026)

The LanguageSkills Team · 6 October 2026

Italian is one of the most enjoyable languages to learn — it's phonetic, expressive and opens up Italy's art, food and cinema. Best of all, it's very beginner-friendly.

Pronunciation: say it as you see it

Italian is read almost exactly as written. Learn the clear vowels, the double consonants (they matter!), and the soft/hard c and g, and you'll pronounce new words with confidence.

Your first words

Start with greetings (ciao, buongiorno, arrivederci), essentials (sì, no, grazie, per favore, scusa), numbers, and core verbs: essere (to be), avere (to have), andare, fare, volere. Practise in phrases: Vorrei un caffè, per favore.

The grammar to focus on first

  • Gender and articles (il, lo, la, i, gli, le).
  • Present tense of common verbs.
  • The passato prossimo for the past.
  • Questions — Come? Dove? Quando? Perché?

A realistic roadmap

A1 in 6–10 weeks, A2 over a few months, then B1/B2 for study, work or simply enjoying la dolce vita in the original language.

A little Italian every day, spoken out loud, turns the language from textbook to real life fast.
