How to Learn Korean from Scratch: A Beginner's Guide (2026)

The LanguageSkills Team · 6 October 2026

Korean has never been more popular — K-dramas, K-pop and webtoons have pulled millions into the language. And there's a wonderful surprise waiting: its alphabet is one of the most logical ever designed.

Read Hangul in a day

Hangul was engineered to be learnable fast. The letters even hint at the shape your mouth makes. A focused day or two and you'll be reading Korean aloud — the single best first step you can take.

Your first words

Start with greetings (안녕하세요 annyeonghaseyo, 감사합니다 gamsahamnida), the polite ~요 ending, and the core sentence structure. Learn numbers (Korean uses two number systems — it's less scary than it sounds).

The grammar to focus on first

  • Particles — 은/는, 이/가, 을/를 mark topic, subject and object.
  • The polite ~요 ending and basic speech levels.
  • Word order — subject, object, verb.
  • Present and past tense of common verbs.

A realistic roadmap

Reach everyday A1/A2 Korean over a few months, then build toward TOPIK I and II if you want proof for study, scholarships or work in Korea.

Learn Hangul first, speak from lesson one, and Korean stops feeling foreign fast.
