German in the Warehouse (Lager) - Storage, Equipment and Safety

Logistics is one of Germany's largest employers, and the warehouse is the place where the sector's language is most concentrated. A German Lager runs on equipment, placement rules and safety instructions, and each of those has its own vocabulary.

The good news is that the vocabulary is physical. A rack, a forklift and a safety shoe are all visible, so the words attach themselves to objects rather than floating free.

The Words of the Warehouse

German termEnglish meaning
das Lagerthe warehouse
die Lagerhallethe warehouse building
das Palettenregalthe pallet racking
der Stellplatzthe storage location
der Gangthe aisle
die Rampethe loading dock
das Logistikzentrumthe distribution centre
die Flächethe floor area

A German warehouse is organised by Stellplatz, and every pallet has an address within the racking that the system and the staff both use. Knowing where something is located is treated as information not instinct, which is why the aisle and the level are always stated together.

Storing and Labelling

German termEnglish meaning
die Einlagerungthe putting away of goods
das Fachthe bay
die Kennzeichnungthe labelling
der Barcodethe barcode
die Bestandsführungthe stock records
das Sperrlagerthe quarantine area
das Gefahrgutthe dangerous goods
die Chargethe batch

Placing goods is guided by the system rather than by preference, so the same article always goes to the same kind of location. Anything damaged, recalled or awaiting inspection goes to the quarantine area, and separating it physically is what prevents it being shipped by mistake.

Equipment

German termEnglish meaning
der Gabelstaplerthe forklift truck
der Hubwagenthe pallet truck
die Ameisethe powered pallet truck
der Kranthe crane
die Sackkarrethe hand truck
die Leiterthe ladder
der Scannerthe handheld scanner
der Staplerscheinthe forklift licence

Nobody drives a forklift in Germany without the licence, and the training includes both theory and a practical test that is repeated periodically. The hand-operated pallet truck, known affectionately as the Ameise, requires no licence but still requires instruction.

Safety in the Warehouse

German termEnglish meaning
der Arbeitsschutzthe occupational safety
die Sicherheitsschuhethe safety shoes
die Warnwestethe high-visibility vest
der Helmthe helmet
die Absperrungthe barrier
der Fluchtwegthe escape route
die Erste Hilfethe first aid
der Unfallthe accident

Safety shoes and a high-visibility vest are mandatory in a German warehouse, and an escape route is kept clear even when the space is tight. An accident is reported and investigated rather than simply treated, because the record is what the insurers and the safety authority examine.

Goods In and Out

German termEnglish meaning
die Warenannahmethe receiving of goods
die Prüfungthe check against the paperwork
der Lieferscheinthe delivery note
die Verladungthe loading
der Lastwagenthe lorry
die Speditionthe freight forwarder
die Übergabethe handover
die Quittungthe receipt

Goods are checked against the delivery note as they arrive, and a discrepancy is noted at once rather than after the driver has left. The loading dock is the place where the warehouse meets the road, so the handover is documented by both sides.

Inventory and Stock

German termEnglish meaning
die Inventurthe stocktake
der Bestandthe stock on hand
die Zählungthe count
die Differenzthe discrepancy
der Schwundthe shrinkage
die Buchungthe posting of a movement
das Systemthe warehouse system
die Korrekturthe correction

Germany requires an annual stocktake, and many warehouses count continuously instead so that the book figure is always close to the truth. A difference is investigated rather than adjusted, because an unexplained correction is exactly what an audit looks for.

Temperature, Dangerous Goods and Rules

German termEnglish meaning
das Kühlhausthe cold store
der Gefahrstoffthe hazardous substance
die Lagerungthe storage
der Brandschutzthe fire protection
die Genehmigungthe permit
die Auflagethe condition attached
die Vorschriftthe regulation
die Prüfungthe inspection

Some goods must be kept cold, some must be kept apart from each other and some may not be stored together at all, and the dangerous goods rules set out which combinations are permitted. Storage conditions attach to the permit for the building, so a change of use is agreed with the authority rather than decided in the warehouse.

Pay, Shift Models and Progression

German termEnglish meaning
die Schichtarbeitthe shift work
der Nachtschichtzuschlagthe night shift supplement
die Zeitarbeitthe agency work
die Arbeitnehmerueberlassungthe supply of temporary labour
der Staplerfuehrerscheinthe forklift licence
die Fachkraft fuer Lagerlogistikthe warehouse logistics specialist
der Vorarbeiterthe team leader
die Betriebszugehoerigkeitthe length of service

German warehouses commonly run two or three shifts, and night work carries the largest Zuschlag. Many workers start through a Zeitarbeitsfirma, a staffing agency that lends them to a site, and after a period the site may take them on directly.

A Staplerschein, the forklift licence, is the single qualification that most improves pay and the choice of shifts. The state-recognised apprenticeship as Fachkraft fuer Lagerlogistik lasts three years and opens supervisory roles.

A Vorarbeiter leads the team, assigns the pick lists and answers for the day's figures. Betriebszugehoerigkeit, the length of service, affects notice periods and often the shift you are offered.

Safety shoes, high-visibility clothing and a briefing before the first shift are normal, and an accident must be reported the same day. The pay slip shows the base wage, the Zuschlaege and every deduction. If you want to understand the briefing, the safety rules and your pay slip, learn German with the warehouse vocabulary built into the course.

The bars show the order of the stages; each value is a sequence number rather than a duration.

Working in a German Warehouse

Warehouse roles are advertised continuously, and the entry positions ask for reliability and a willingness to work shifts rather than for qualifications. A forklift licence is the one certificate that raises pay immediately, and many employers will fund the training.

The instructions are short, written and repeated, which helps a learner enormously. If you want to learn German for warehouse work, the storage, equipment and safety vocabulary is the practical place to begin.
