German for Logistics (Logistik) - Freight, Forwarding and Delivery Windows

Germany sits at the centre of European freight, and its road haulage market is the largest in the European Union. That position creates a dense layer of freight forwarders, carriers and warehouse operators, all of whom work in a specialist German that reaches across borders.

The vocabulary of logistics is unusually international, which helps: a Frachtbrief, a Container and a Termin mean roughly what their English equivalents suggest. What is distinctly German is the paperwork and the punctuality.

The Words of Logistics

German termEnglish meaning
die Logistikthe logistics
die Speditionthe freight forwarding firm
der Spediteurthe forwarder
die Frachtthe freight
die Sendungthe consignment
der Transportthe transport
die Ladungthe load
die Dispositionthe scheduling of vehicles and loads

A Spedition in Germany organises transport rather than necessarily owning it, and the Spediteur therefore sits between the customer and the carrier. Disposition is the department that decides which vehicle goes where, and it is where the cost of a job is effectively decided.

Freight by Road, Rail, Sea and Air

German termEnglish meaning
der Lastwagenthe lorry
die Bahnthe railway
die Seefrachtthe sea freight
die Luftfrachtthe air freight
der Containerthe container
das Sammelgutthe consolidated shipment
die Teilladungthe part load
die Komplettladungthe full load

Germany moves most of its freight by road, and the alternatives are used where the distance or the volume makes them worthwhile. A consolidated shipment shares a vehicle between several customers, which is cheaper but slower, and a part load occupies only part of a trailer.

The Forwarder's Role

German termEnglish meaning
der Frachtbriefthe consignment note
der Transportauftragthe transport order
die Auftragsbestätigungthe order confirmation
die Haftungthe liability
die Transportversicherungthe transport insurance
das Inkassothe collection of payment
die Nachnahmethe cash on delivery
der Frachtführerthe carrier

The forwarder accepts the transport order, confirms it in writing and issues a consignment note that identifies the goods, the route and the parties. Liability for loss or damage is limited by law and by the terms of the contract, and additional transport insurance is arranged separately because the statutory limit is low.

Delivery Windows and Scheduling

German termEnglish meaning
das Zeitfensterthe delivery window
der Lieferterminthe delivery date
die Anlieferungthe delivery to the customer
die Verzögerungthe delay
die Tourenplanungthe route planning
die Auslastungthe utilisation of the vehicle
der Stauthe traffic jam
die Terminabsprachethe agreement of a time

German warehouses book deliveries into defined time windows, and arriving outside the window usually means waiting at the gate rather than unloading. That single rule drives most of the scheduling discipline in the sector, because a late vehicle delays every appointment behind it.

Documents and Tracking

German termEnglish meaning
der Lieferscheinthe delivery note
die Zollpapierethe customs documents
die Sendungsverfolgungthe tracking of a consignment
der Nachweisthe proof
die Unterschriftthe signature
der Ablieferbelegthe proof of delivery
das Paketthe parcel
die Kennnummerthe tracking reference

A consignment is tracked by a reference number, and the delivery is proved by a signature or a photograph rather than by the driver's word. That proof is what the payment depends on, which is why the ablieferbeleg is treated as the most important document on the vehicle.

Costs and Freight Terms

German termEnglish meaning
die Frachtkostenthe freight costs
die Tonnagethe tonnage
die Nebenkostenthe additional costs
die Wartezeitthe waiting time
die Incotermsthe international delivery terms
der Warenwertthe value of the goods
die Rechnungthe invoice
die Mautthe motorway toll for heavy vehicles

Freight is priced by weight, volume and distance, and every hour of waiting adds to the cost. The delivery terms decide when the risk passes from seller to buyer, and Germany also charges a distance-based toll on heavy vehicles using its motorways, which is passed on within the freight rate.

Customs and Moving Goods Across Borders

German termEnglish meaning
die Verzollungthe customs clearance
die Zollanmeldungthe customs declaration
die EORI-Nummerthe EU customs identification number
die Ausfuhrthe export
die Einfuhrthe import
der Ursprungthe origin of the goods
die Abfertigungthe processing at the border
die Einfuhrabgabethe import duty

Goods crossing the external border of the European Union need a customs declaration, and the number that identifies the trader is issued once and used in every declaration. Within the customs union there is no declaration, but the documents still travel with the goods because they support the tax treatment of the transaction.

Careers, Training and Pay in Logistics

German termEnglish meaning
der Disponentthe dispatcher, the planner
der Speditionskaufmannthe freight forwarding clerk
die Ausbildungthe apprenticeship
der Sachbearbeiterthe office clerk
die Weiterbildungthe further training
der Fuhrparkthe vehicle fleet
die Dispositionthe scheduling function
die Betriebsstaettethe operating site

Logistics offers two very different ladders in Germany. On the warehouse and driving side the route runs from helper to Vorarbeiter or Berufskraftfahrer; on the office side it runs from Sachbearbeiter to Disponent, the person who plans the tours.

The classic entry to the office side is the three-year apprenticeship as Kaufmann fuer Spedition und Logistikdienstleistung, which combines a training contract with vocational college and a final examination.

A Disponent earns more than general office staff because the day's plan is their responsibility, and Weiterbildung in customs, dangerous goods or freight law raises the rate further. Much German freight crosses a border, so a second language is an asset in the Disposition. If you want to move from the warehouse floor to the Disposition, learn German with the logistics vocabulary built into the course.

The bars show the order of the stages; each value is a sequence number rather than a duration.

Working in German Logistics

Forwarders and carriers recruit dispatchers, documentation staff and customer service staff, and the roles ask for accuracy and telephone confidence rather than heavy technical knowledge. English is used constantly, because the freight crosses borders, so bilingual staff are valued highly.

The documents are standardised and the terms are internationally agreed. If you want to learn German for logistics work, the consignment, delivery and customs vocabulary is the practical place to begin.
