German for Delivery and Courier Work (Kurier- und Lieferdienst) - Routes, Handovers and Proof of Delivery

The last hundred metres of every delivery are the hardest, and in Germany they are walked by a courier who has to find a door, a name and a signature in a language that may not be their first. The work looks simple from outside and is not.

A delivery driver is the only person the customer meets, so the job carries the reputation of the whole company. The vocabulary is small, but it is used hundreds of times a day, and fluency in it is what makes the round quick.

The Words of the Route

German termEnglish meaning
der Kurierthe courier
der Lieferdienstthe delivery service
die Sendungthe shipment
das Paketthe parcel
die Tourthe round
die Zustellungthe delivery to the door
das Depotthe depot
die Zustellquotethe delivery success rate

The route is built at the depot in the morning, and the driver receives a scanned list of stops in an order chosen by the system. A Zustellquote near one hundred per cent is the target, because every failed stop costs the company a second attempt.

Planning the Day

German termEnglish meaning
die Tourenplanungthe route planning
die Reihenfolgethe order of the stops
das Zeitfensterthe time window
die Adressethe address
die Umleitungthe diversion
der Stauthe traffic jam
die Nachbarlieferungthe delivery to a neighbour
die Prioritätthe priority

A round is planned so that the heaviest parcels come off first and the time windows are respected, but a single Stau can break the whole sequence. Drivers therefore learn to reorder their own stops in their head, and to tell the depot when a window will be missed.

Loading and the Vehicle

German termEnglish meaning
das Fahrzeugthe vehicle
der Transporterthe van
der Laderaumthe load space
der Rollwagenthe roll cage
der Handscannerthe handheld scanner
das Ladevolumenthe load volume
die Sortierungthe sorting
die Ladungssicherungthe load securing

Loading is done in reverse delivery order, so that the first stop is nearest the door. A roll cage that shifts in a corner is a safety risk as well as a nuisance, which is why the load is secured even on a short round.

Finding the Address

German termEnglish meaning
der Hausmeisterthe caretaker
die Klingelthe doorbell
der Tuercodethe door code
die Etagethe floor
der Briefkastenthe letterbox
der Ablageortthe agreed drop-off place
der Hinterhofthe rear courtyard
die Zufahrtthe access road

German buildings often hide their entrances in a Hinterhof or behind a code lock, and the letterbox carries the name that confirms you are in the right place. Reading the names before ringing saves a great deal of time on a large round.

The Handover

German termEnglish meaning
der Empfaengerthe recipient
die Uebergabethe handover
die Unterschriftthe signature
der Ausweisthe identity document
die Vollmachtthe authorisation
der Nachbarthe neighbour
die Ablagegenehmigungthe permission to leave the parcel
die Quittungthe receipt

The handover is short and formal: name, parcel, signature, goodbye. If the recipient is out, a neighbour may take the parcel only where the sender has allowed it, and an Ablagegenehmigung must be recorded on the scanner rather than assumed.

When Nobody Is In

German termEnglish meaning
die Benachrichtigungthe notification card
die Abholungthe collection
die Filialethe branch, the pickup point
der zweite Zustellversuchthe second delivery attempt
die Verwahrungthe safekeeping
die Fristthe deadline
die Rucksendungthe return to sender
der Abholscheinthe collection slip

A failed delivery ends with a card in the letterbox and the parcel held for a fixed number of days. The Frist matters, because after it expires the parcel travels back to the sender and the customer has to start again.

Proof and Problems

German termEnglish meaning
der Zustellnachweisthe proof of delivery
die Sendungsverfolgungthe parcel tracking
der Statusthe status
der Verlustthe loss
der Schadenthe damage
die Haftungthe liability
die Erstattungthe refund
der Schadensberichtthe damage report

Every scan is a legal record, and the Zustellnachweis is what settles a dispute about whether a parcel arrived. A lost or damaged parcel needs a report the same day, with photographs, because the insurer works from the file rather than the memory of the driver.

Pay, Contracts and the Working Day

German termEnglish meaning
der Stundenlohnthe hourly wage
die Tourenpauschalethe flat rate per round
die Spesenthe expenses allowance
die Schichtzulagethe shift supplement
der Arbeitsvertragthe employment contract
die Teilzeitthe part-time work
der Betriebsausweisthe company identity pass
der Betriebsratthe works council

Delivery pay in Germany is usually an hourly rate plus a Tourenpauschale for the round, and the rate rises for weekends and public holidays. A large courier firm is normally bound by a Tarifvertrag, while a small one often is not.

Most contracts become permanent after a short Probezeit, and many drivers work part-time around study or family. The Betriebsausweis opens the depot gate, and losing it has to be reported the same day.

A driver works alone, so the relationship with the depot runs by telephone and by scanner, and clear reporting is the whole of the communication. A Betriebsrat, where one exists, represents the drivers on rota and vehicle questions.

The route onwards runs from driver to tour leader, to depot shift manager, or into dispatch. In Germany an ordinary driving licence is enough for most van rounds, while heavier vehicles need a higher class. If you want to understand the scanner, the route and the doorstep, learn German with the delivery vocabulary built into the course.

The bars show the order of the stages; each value is a sequence number rather than a duration.

Working in Delivery in Germany

Delivery work is one of the quickest routes into a German job, because employers need drivers continuously and training happens on the round. The barrier is not the driving but the doorstep conversation and the scanner app.

Most of the language is fixed and repeatable, which makes it ideal for learning in short, frequent sessions. If you want to learn German for delivery work, the phrases for the doorstep, the notification card and the handover can be learned in a few weeks.

German delivery work is built on a short, repeated doorstep conversation. Learn German with route, handover and proof-of-delivery language built into the course.
