🇧🇩 Bangladesh: allowed, but only with specific countries — check the list, don’t assume

Bangladesh’s Citizenship Act permits dual nationality, but only with countries on an approved list — reportedly around 100 to 103 countries. Whether Germany is actually one of them is a question our research couldn’t settle cleanly, and we’re telling you that directly rather than guessing.

The approved-country system

Under the Bangladesh Citizenship Act, dual citizenship is permitted only with countries the government has formally approved for this purpose — reported counts range roughly from 100 to 103 countries, most of them in Europe, North America, and parts of the Commonwealth. Holding citizenship from a country NOT on this list, as a dual national, is treated differently and can put your Bangladeshi citizenship at risk.

Germany’s inclusion on this list is contested in the sources we reviewed — some lists we found during research include Germany, others we found did not, and we couldn’t confirm which is current with full confidence. Before you plan around either outcome, verify directly with the Bangladesh High Commission in Berlin or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — this is exactly the kind of detail worth a phone call rather than an assumption, given how high the stakes are.

Why this matters more than it might seem

Getting this wrong doesn’t just mean paperwork — it can mean your Bangladeshi passport being invalidated after the fact if the country you naturalised in turns out not to be on the approved list. Confirm before you naturalise, not after.
