How to Practise Speaking a Language When You're Alone

The LanguageSkills Team · 6 October 2026

You don't need a conversation partner to become a confident speaker. Some of the most effective speaking practice is done entirely alone.

Shadowing

Play a short clip of a native speaker and repeat immediately, copying the rhythm and intonation. Shadowing trains your mouth and ear at once — it's one of the best solo techniques there is.

Self-talk and narration

Describe what you're doing as you do it: cooking, walking, getting ready. It turns dead time into fluency practice and reveals exactly which words you're missing.

Record yourself

Answer a question aloud, record it, and listen back. You'll catch pronunciation and hesitation you can't notice in the moment.

Talk to an AI tutor

A spoken AI lesson gives you real back-and-forth and instant correction — the closest thing to a patient partner, available any time.

Fluency is built by output. You can produce output alone — so there's no excuse to wait.

Practise out loud daily

Our courses are built around speaking, with live correction every lesson. Start free or see pricing.
