How to Overcome the Fear of Speaking a New Language

The LanguageSkills Team · 6 October 2026

Plenty of people can read and understand a language but freeze the moment they have to speak. That fear is the single biggest barrier to fluency — and it's very beatable.

Accept that mistakes are the method

You cannot learn to speak without speaking badly first. Every error is data. Fluent speakers aren't people who never made mistakes — they're people who made them out loud, early and often.

Practise where it's safe

Build confidence in a low-stakes setting first — talking to yourself, or to a patient AI tutor that corrects without judgement — before high-pressure conversations.

Lower the bar

  • Aim to be understood, not to be perfect.
  • Learn a few "rescue" phrases: "How do you say...?", "Can you repeat that?"
  • Keep talking when you're unsure — paraphrase instead of stopping.
Confidence doesn't come before speaking. It comes from speaking.
