Dutch for Delivery and Courier Work (Bezorgdienst) - Routes, Handovers and Proof of Delivery

The last hundred metres of every delivery are the hardest, and in the Netherlands they are walked by a bezorger who has to find a door, a name and a signature. The work looks simple from outside and is not.

A delivery driver is the only person the customer meets, so the job carries the reputation of the whole company. The vocabulary is small, but it is used hundreds of times a day, and fluency in it is what makes the round quick.

The Words of the Route

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de koerierthe courier
de bezorgdienstthe delivery service
de zendingthe shipment
het pakketthe parcel
de routethe route
de ritthe round
de bezorgingthe delivery to the door
het depotthe depot

The route is built at the depot in the morning, and the driver receives a scanned list of stops in an order chosen by the system. Dutch depots measure the first-time delivery rate closely, because every failed stop costs a second attempt and a second visit.

Planning the Day

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de routeplanningthe route planning
de volgordethe order of the stops
het tijdslotthe time slot
het adresthe address
de omleidingthe diversion
de filethe traffic jam
de bezorging bij de burenthe delivery to a neighbour
de prioriteitthe priority

A round is planned so that the heaviest parcels come off first and the time slots are respected, but a single file can break the whole sequence. Drivers therefore learn to reorder their own stops in their head, and to tell the depot when a slot will be missed.

Loading and the Vehicle

Dutch termEnglish meaning
het voertuigthe vehicle
de bestelbusthe van
de laadruimtethe load space
de rolcontainerthe roll cage
de handscannerthe handheld scanner
het laadvolumethe load volume
de sorteringthe sorting
de ladingzekeringthe load securing

Loading is done in reverse delivery order, so that the first stop is nearest the door. A roll container that shifts in a corner is a safety risk as well as a nuisance, which is why the load is secured even on a short round.

Finding the Address

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de beheerderthe caretaker
de belthe doorbell
de toegangscodethe door code
de verdiepingthe floor
de brievenbusthe letterbox
de afleverplekthe agreed drop-off place
de binnenplaatsthe rear courtyard
de opritthe access road

Dutch buildings often hide their entrances in a binnenplaats or behind a code lock, and the letterbox carries the name that confirms you are in the right place. Reading the names before ringing saves a great deal of time on a large round.

The Handover

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de ontvangerthe recipient
de overdrachtthe handover
de handtekeningthe signature
het legitimatiebewijsthe identity document
de machtigingthe authorisation
de burenthe neighbours
de toestemmingthe permission to leave the parcel
de bonthe receipt

The handover is short and formal: name, parcel, signature, goodbye. If the recipient is out, a neighbour may take the parcel only where the sender has allowed it, and permission to leave a parcel must be recorded on the scanner rather than assumed.

When Nobody Is In

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de kennisgevingthe notification card
de ophalingthe collection
de vestigingthe branch, the pickup point
de tweede bezorgpogingthe second delivery attempt
de bewaringthe safekeeping
de termijnthe deadline
de retourzendingthe return to sender
het ophaalbewijsthe collection slip

A failed delivery ends with a card in the letterbox and the parcel held for a fixed number of days. The termijn matters, because after it expires the parcel travels back to the sender and the customer has to start again.

Proof and Problems

Dutch termEnglish meaning
het bezorgbewijsthe proof of delivery
de zendingstraceringthe parcel tracking
de statusthe status
het verliesthe loss
de schadethe damage
de aansprakelijkheidthe liability
de vergoedingthe refund
het schaderapportthe damage report

Every scan is a legal record, and the bezorgbewijs is what settles a dispute about whether a parcel arrived. A lost or damaged parcel needs a report the same day, with photographs, because the insurer works from the file rather than from the memory of the driver.

Pay, Contracts and the Working Day

Dutch termEnglish meaning
het uurloonthe hourly wage
de ritvergoedingthe flat rate per round
de onkostenvergoedingthe expenses allowance
de toeslagthe shift supplement
de arbeidsovereenkomstthe employment contract
de deeltijdthe part-time work
de bedrijfspasthe company identity pass
de ondernemingsraadthe works council

Delivery pay in the Netherlands is usually an hourly rate plus a vergoeding per rit, and the rate rises for evenings, weekends and public holidays. A large courier firm is normally bound by a cao, while a small one often is not.

Most contracts become permanent after a short proeftijd, and many bezorgers work part-time around study or family. The bedrijfspas opens the depot gate, and losing it has to be reported the same day.

A driver works alone, so the relationship with the depot runs by telephone and by scanner, and clear reporting is the whole of the communication. An ondernemingsraad, where one exists, represents the drivers on rota and vehicle questions.

The route onwards runs from bezorger to ritcoordinator, to depot shift manager, or into planning. In the Netherlands an ordinary driving licence covers a small van, while heavier vehicles need a higher category. If you want to understand the scanner, the route and the doorstep, learn Dutch with the delivery vocabulary built into the course.

The bars show the order of the stages; each value is a sequence number rather than a duration.

Working in Delivery in the Netherlands

Delivery work is one of the quickest routes into a Dutch job, because employers need drivers continuously and training happens on the round. The barrier is not the driving but the doorstep conversation and the scanner app.

Most of the language is fixed and repeatable, which makes it ideal for learning in short, frequent sessions. If you want to learn Dutch for delivery work, the phrases for the doorstep, the notification card and the handover can be learned in a few weeks.

Dutch delivery work is built on a short, repeated doorstep conversation. Learn Dutch with route, handover and proof-of-delivery language built into the course.
