Dutch in the Warehouse (Magazijn) - Storage, Equipment and Safety

The Netherlands is a logistics country in a way that few others are, and Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe by cargo volume. That position supports a dense network of distribution centres, and warehouse work is therefore one of the most available jobs in the Dutch labour market.

The language is physical and repetitive, and much of it is written on labels and instruction boards rather than spoken. That is good news for a learner, because the words are visible all day.

The Words of the Warehouse

Dutch termEnglish meaning
het magazijnthe warehouse
het distributiecentrumthe distribution centre
de stellingthe racking
de palletstellingthe pallet racking
het vakthe bay
het gangpadthe aisle
het laadperronthe loading dock
de locatiethe storage location

Every pallet in a Dutch warehouse has a location code, and the code is spoken aloud as a set of numbers rather than described. The vak and the gangpad together identify the place, and the system expects you to confirm that you are standing in front of it.

Storing and Labelling

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de opslagthe storage
de goederenontvangstthe receiving of goods
de etiketteringthe labelling
de barcodethe barcode
het voorraadbeheerthe stock management
de quarantainethe quarantine area
de gevaarlijke stoffenthe dangerous goods
de partijthe batch

Goods are scanned as they are received and again as they are stored, so the record is built up rather than written afterwards. Anything damaged, recalled or awaiting a decision goes to the quarantine area, and physical separation is what keeps it out of a customer's order.

Equipment

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de heftruckthe forklift truck
de palletwagenthe pallet truck
de pompwagenthe hand pallet truck
de elektrische palletwagenthe powered pallet truck
de kraanthe crane
de steekwagenthe hand truck
de ladderthe ladder
het heftruckcertificaatthe forklift certificate

A forklift may only be operated in the Netherlands by someone holding a recognised certificate, and the training covers both handling and the inspection of the truck. The hand pallet truck needs no certificate but still requires instruction, and an injury caused by misuse is treated as a failing of the employer as well as the operator.

Safety in the Warehouse

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de arbothe working conditions
de Arbowetthe Working Conditions Act
de veiligheidsschoenenthe safety shoes
het veiligheidshesjethe high-visibility vest
de helmthe helmet
de afzettingthe barrier
de vluchtroutethe escape route
de EHBOthe first aid

Dutch safety vocabulary is built around the word arbo, which appears on signs, in contracts and in inspections. Safety shoes and a high-visibility vest are compulsory on the floor, and the escape routes are marked and kept clear because the fire service checks them.

Goods In and Out

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de vrachtwagenthe lorry
de pakbonthe delivery note
de controlethe check against the paperwork
het laden en lossenthe loading and unloading
de expediteurthe freight forwarder
de overdrachtthe handover
de chauffeurthe driver
de bonthe note signed on receipt

A Dutch delivery arrives with a pakbon, and the goods are counted against it before the driver leaves, because a discrepancy noted later is difficult to prove and often impossible to recover. The signed note is the evidence, which is why the driver waits while the count is made.

Stock and Counting

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de voorraadthe stock
de inventarisatiethe stocktake
de tellingthe count
het verschilthe discrepancy
de dervingthe loss
de boekingthe posting
het systeemthe warehouse system
de correctiethe correction

Dutch warehouses often count continuously, so that a cycle of locations is checked every day and the book stock stays close to reality. A difference is investigated rather than written off, because an unexplained correction is the first thing an auditor asks about.

Cold, Hazardous Goods and Rules

Dutch termEnglish meaning
het koelhuisthe cold store
de koelcelthe cold room
de gevaarlijke stofthe hazardous substance
de brandveiligheidthe fire safety
de vergunningthe permit
het voorschriftthe regulation
de inspectiethe inspection
de meldingthe notification

Cold storage, hazardous substances and fire safety are each governed by their own rules, and a change in what is stored may require the permit to be amended. That is why a new product line is discussed with the safety officer before the first pallet arrives rather than afterwards.

Pay, Shift Allowances and Progression

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de ploegendienstthe shift work
de nachttoeslagthe night supplement
de uitzendkrachtthe agency worker
het uitzendbureauthe staffing agency
het heftruckcertificaatthe forklift certificate
de logistiek medewerkerthe logistics worker
de voormanthe team leader
de vaste aanstellingthe permanent contract

Dutch warehouses run in ploegen, and night work carries the highest toeslag under the cao. Many workers begin as uitzendkrachten through an uitzendbureau and are taken on permanently once the site knows them.

The heftruckcertificaat, the forklift certificate, is the qualification that most improves pay and the choice of shifts, and it can be earned in a short course. A lot of Dutch warehouses use English on the floor, but the safety instructions and the documents are in Dutch.

A voorman leads the team and reports the day's figures, while a vaste aanstelling brings security of hours and a notice period. Safety shoes, a high-visibility vest and a short instruction before the first shift are standard, and an accident must be reported at once. If you want to understand the instruction, the safety rules and your pay slip, learn Dutch with the warehouse vocabulary built into the course.

The bars show the order of the stages; each value is a sequence number rather than a duration.

Working in a Dutch Warehouse

Dutch distribution centres recruit continuously, and many operate through employment agencies that place staff on temporary contracts before offering a permanent one. A forklift certificate raises pay immediately, and English is often enough alongside basic Dutch for the picking roles.

The instructions are written, short and repeated, which makes the work easy to learn. If you want to learn Dutch for warehouse work, the storage, equipment and safety vocabulary is the practical place to begin.
