How Much of a Language Do You Need to Travel?

The LanguageSkills Team · 6 October 2026

Good news for travellers: you don't need fluency to have a far richer trip. A surprisingly small amount of a language — used with a smile — changes how people treat you everywhere.

The magic level: A1–A2

With basic A1–A2, you can greet people, order food, shop, ask directions, and handle small problems. That's enough to feel independent and connected rather than lost.

The phrases that matter most

  • Greetings and "please / thank you / sorry".
  • "Do you speak English?" and "How much is it?"
  • "Where is...?" and "I'd like...".
  • Numbers, for prices and times.

Why even a little goes so far

Effort is appreciated everywhere. Locals warm up, help more, and often switch to being delighted you tried. A few dozen phrases can transform a trip from transactional to memorable.

You don't need to be fluent to travel well. You need to be willing to try.
