Welding is one of the most transferable trades in Germany, and one of the most tightly regulated. A welder who cannot read a German welding instruction cannot be certified, and without certification the work is not there. The vocabulary is therefore tied directly to employability rather than to politeness.
German welding language comes from a small number of standards, which is why it is consistent from one workshop to the next. Learn the processes and the certificates, and you can read a welding instruction in Düsseldorf as easily as one in Stuttgart.
The Processes and Their Numbers
German welders name processes by number as often as by name, and the numbers come from DIN EN ISO 4063. Knowing both is what lets you follow an instruction over the noise of a workshop.
| German term | Number | English meaning |
|---|---|---|
| das Lichtbogenschweißen | 111 | manual metal arc welding |
| das Schutzgasschweißen | 13x | gas-shielded welding |
| das MAG-Schweißen | 135 | metal active gas welding |
| das MIG-Schweißen | 131 | metal inert gas welding |
| das WIG-Schweißen | 141 | tungsten inert gas welding |
| das Widerstandsschweißen | 21 | resistance welding |
| das Löten | 9x | soldering and brazing |
| die Schweißnaht | - | the weld seam |
| die Kehlnaht | - | the fillet weld |
| die Stumpfnaht | - | the butt weld |
The two you will hear most are WIG, called TIG in English, and MAG. WIG is the slower, cleaner process used for stainless and thin material; MAG is the faster process that dominates structural steelwork. Saying "Ich schweiße WIG" or "Ich habe MAG geschweißt" tells a German foreman in three words which jobs you can be given.
The Certificate Is the Job
German welding work is gated by certificates issued to DIN EN ISO 9606-1, and they are specific. A certificate names the process, the material group, the welding position and the thickness range, so a welder certified for MAG in the flat position cannot simply be moved to vertical.
The certificate is issued after a test piece is welded and examined, and it is renewed periodically. The words around it are die Schweißerprüfung, the welder test; das Prüfzeugnis, the certificate; and die Gültigkeit, its validity. Every interview asks the same question: "Welche Prüfung haben Sie, für welches Verfahren und welche Position?"
Positions, Seams and Drawings
German drawing symbols follow ISO 2553, and the position codes come from ISO 6947. Positions are labelled PA, PB, PC and so on, with PA flat and PF vertical up. Der Nahtübergang is the weld toe, die Einbrandtiefe the penetration depth, and die Nahtvorbereitung the joint preparation.
Reading the drawing before you start is a professional habit in Germany rather than a delay. Die Schweißanweisung, the welding procedure specification, states current, voltage, gas flow and travel speed. If a weld fails inspection, the first question is not whether you were skilled but whether you followed the Schweißanweisung exactly.
Safety in a German Welding Bay
Welding safety vocabulary is short and imperative. Die Schweißerbrille carries a filter shade, der Schweißschirm is the welding helmet, and die Absaugung is the extraction system that removes fume at the arc. Der Hitzeschutz covers burns, and die Brandwache is the fire watch required in some areas.
Three rules are enforced without exception. Never weld coated or stainless material without extraction or respiratory protection. Never weld a container that held fuel without a documented cleaning certificate. And never look at an arc without a filter — der Lichtbogen damages eyes in seconds, and the injury is painless until the evening.
Getting Your Qualification Recognised
Foreign welding certificates are not automatically valid in Germany. The route is the Anerkennung, and in practice it usually means sitting a German test to DIN EN ISO 9606-1, because the standard governs the certificate rather than the country in which you trained.
The test itself is short and its vocabulary is fixed: die Testschweißung, the test weld; die Sichtprüfung, the visual inspection; die Durchstrahlungsprüfung, radiographic testing; and die Bewertungsgruppe, the acceptance level. Preparing that vocabulary is the same work as preparing for the test.
Because the test is short and its vocabulary is fixed, preparing for it is mostly language work. Candidates who learn German around the certificate standards tend to pass on the first attempt.
The axis shows the order of the qualification route. The certificate that comes out of it names process, material, position and thickness range.
Where to Start
If you already weld, the fastest route into German industry is to have your current certificates translated and then to sit the German test for the process you are strongest in. Structural steelwork, pipeline and tank work pay the most, and all three are certificate-gated.
If you are starting out, a dual training place as a Metallbauer or Konstruktionsmechaniker includes welding certification inside the qualification, which is one of the few ways to be paid while you acquire it. Preparing the vocabulary before you arrive is the difference between starting in September and starting next year, and it is exactly what it means to learn German for the welding trade.
