German for Plumbing and Heating (SHK): Pipework, Boilers and Customer Calls

The German trade abbreviation SHK stands for Sanitär, Heizung und Klima, and the modern job title is Anlagenmechaniker für Sanitär-, Heizungs- und Klimatechnik. It is one of the most reliably in-demand trades in the country, because almost every building in Germany has a heating system that legally must be maintained.

What makes this trade unusually language-heavy is the customer. An industrial job can be done with a work order and a handover, but an SHK job happens in somebody's cellar, where the homeowner asks questions while you work.

Water, Gas and Heat

Three media define the trade, and each carries its own regulations. Trinkwasser installations follow the DIN 1988 series, gas installations follow the DVGW technical rules known as TRGI, and heating systems are governed alongside the building energy rules.

German termEnglish meaning
die Trinkwasserinstallationthe drinking water installation
die Gasinstallationthe gas installation
die Heizungsanlagethe heating system
der Vorlaufthe flow line
der Rücklaufthe return line
der Heizkörperthe radiator
die Thermethe boiler
das Ausdehnungsgefäßthe expansion vessel
die Umwälzpumpethe circulation pump
die Entlüftungthe venting, bleeding

Two values are worth committing to memory because they come up in conversation constantly. Hot water must reach at least sixty degrees at the outlet of the heater and at least fifty-five at every tap, a hygiene requirement aimed at Legionellen. A sealed heating system normally runs around one and a half to two bar, and a pressure below one bar is the reason a radiator is cold at the top.

The Rules That Define the Job

German heating and water work is regulated by trade rather than by company. Plumbing businesses that work on gas must be registered as an eingetragener Fachbetrieb, and the registration is tied to the qualification of the staff. Working on a gas installation without it is not a shortcut; it is a criminal matter.

The other distinctive feature is der Schornsteinfeger, the chimney sweep. In Germany this is a statutory role connected to emission and fire safety, and the sweep inspects installations on a fixed cycle. Explaining to a customer that the Schornsteinfeger must be informed is part of ordinary SHK work.

Customer Calls and the Words for Them

Customer language is informal and describes symptoms rather than causes. "Die Heizung wird nicht warm", the heating is not getting warm. "Es tropft", it is dripping. "Der Abfluss ist verstopft", the drain is blocked. "Die Toilette läuft durch", the toilet keeps running. "Die Therme macht Geräusche", the boiler is making noises.

Your answer follows a fixed shape: Termin, Fehlerbild, Ursache, Maßnahme. Arrange the appointment, record the symptom, establish the cause, name the action. Saying "Ich prüfe erst den Druck und entlüfte die Heizkörper" reassures a German homeowner more than any amount of small talk.

Customer calls are where the vocabulary is tested. If you want to learn German for SHK work, the explanation is part of the repair.

Quoting, Ordering and the Paperwork

German customers expect a Kostenvoranschlag before work starts. A Kostenvoranschlag is an estimate that may be charged for, while an Angebot is a binding offer. Mixing the two is a commercial problem rather than a language one.

On site, the paperwork is short and standard: der Arbeitsbericht, the job report; der Stundenzettel, the time sheet; das Aufmaß, the measured quantities the invoice is built on; and der Lieferschein, the delivery note for material. Poor German here converts into unpaid hours, which is the most expensive kind of language mistake in the trade.

Bleeding, Filling and Servicing in German

The routine jobs have fixed scripts. Entlüften is bleeding a radiator, and the sentence is "Ich entlüfte die Heizkörper, dann wird es wieder warm." Befüllen is filling the system: "Ich fülle Wasser nach und stelle den Druck auf 1,8 bar." Warten is servicing, and in Germany an annual Wartung is expected rather than optional.

Heating modernisation is currently the busiest kind of work in the trade, and it brings its own vocabulary: der hydraulische Abgleich, the hydraulic balancing of a system; die Heizlastberechnung, the heat load calculation; and der Wärmepumpen-Einbau, heat pump installation. A customer asking "Lohnt sich eine Wärmepumpe?" is asking a technical and a financial question at once.

The axis shows the order of the visit, not a quantity. Step four is the one German customers insist on before work begins.

Getting Into the Trade

The standard entry route is the three-and-a-half-year dual Ausbildung as Anlagenmechaniker SHK, and because the trade is short of staff, companies hire continuously. Fitters from abroad often start as Helfer while their qualification is assessed.

Interviews are practical. You will be asked whether you can solder copper, press composite pipe, read a heating schematic and explain a fault to a customer. Being able to describe your own experience in German trade vocabulary is what turns that conversation into a contract, and it is the specific reason to learn German with SHK material rather than a general course.

SHK work happens in front of the customer. Learn German with pipework, boiler and customer-call vocabulary built into every unit.
