German for Banking (Bankwesen) - Accounts, Transfers and Advice

Germany has one of the most distinctive banking markets in Europe, with a large number of local savings banks and cooperative banks sitting alongside the private institutions. Banking is also more branch-based and more advice-driven than in the Netherlands or the United Kingdom.

For anyone working in a German branch, the vocabulary divides neatly into accounts, payments, credit and advice. Each of those four areas has its own set of words, and the fourth is the one employers value most.

The Words of the Bank

German termEnglish meaning
die Bankthe bank
die Filialethe branch
der Kundethe customer
das Kontothe account
der Kontoinhaberthe account holder
die Kontonummerthe account number
die Bankleitzahlthe bank sort code
der Kontostandthe account balance

German banking still refers to the Bankleitzahl in daily speech even though the IBAN has replaced it for payments, because the sort code identifies the branch and the region. A German account number for domestic transfers is ten digits, and the IBAN built from it is twenty-two characters long.

Opening an Account

German termEnglish meaning
die Kontoeröffnungthe opening of an account
das Girokontothe current account
das Sparkontothe savings account
das Tagesgeldkontothe instant access account
der Ausweisthe identity document
die Identitätsprüfungthe identity check
das Referenzkontothe reference account
die Vollmachtthe authority to act

Opening an account in Germany requires an identity check, and the process is often completed with a video call rather than in a branch. A current account normally has no minimum balance, but a monthly account fee is standard practice at most institutions and is stated in the price list.

Transfers and Direct Debits

German termEnglish meaning
die Überweisungthe transfer
der Zahlungsauftragthe payment order
die Lastschriftthe direct debit
das SEPA-Verfahrenthe single euro payments area procedure
die Fristthe deadline
der Zahlungseingangthe arrival of a payment
die Rückbuchungthe reversal
der Verwendungszweckthe payment reference

A German transfer is executed on the same day if the order arrives before the cut-off, and the Verwendungszweck is the field that carries the invoice number so the recipient can match the money to the debt. Direct debits require a mandate, and a customer may reverse one for eight weeks without giving a reason.

Cards, Cash and the Machine

German termEnglish meaning
die Girocardthe domestic debit card
die Kreditkartethe credit card
der Geldautomatthe cash machine
das Bargeldthe cash
die Abhebungthe withdrawal
das Limitthe limit
die Geheimzahlthe PIN
die Gebührthe fee

Germany remains a cash-using country, and a great many small businesses still accept only cash or a domestic debit card. Withdrawals from a machine belonging to another bank's network often carry a fee, which is why branch customers are told which machines are free.

Credit and Lending

German termEnglish meaning
der Kreditthe loan
das Darlehenthe loan facility
der Dispokreditthe overdraft
der Ratenkreditthe instalment loan
die Baufinanzierungthe mortgage
der Zinssatzthe interest rate
die Tilgungthe repayment of principal
die Schufathe credit reference agency

An overdraft is the most common German credit facility, and it is the most expensive, which is why a branch adviser will usually propose converting a permanent overdraft into an instalment loan. Lenders obtain a credit report, and the interest rate offered depends on the result as well as the term.

Saving and Investment

German termEnglish meaning
das Sparenthe saving
der Sparplanthe savings plan
der Fondsthe fund
das Wertpapierthe security
das Depotthe securities account
die Altersvorsorgethe provision for old age
die Renditethe return
das Risikothe risk

Germany has a strong savings culture, and the savings plan with a regular monthly contribution is the standard product rather than an exotic one. Since the low-interest years, more customers have been willing to hold funds, so an adviser is expected to explain both expected return and risk in plain language.

Advice, Records and Complaints

German termEnglish meaning
die Beratungthe advice
das Beratungsprotokollthe record of the advice given
die Aufklärungthe disclosure of information
die Widerrufsfristthe withdrawal period
die Beschwerdethe complaint
die Ombudsstellethe ombudsman
die BaFinthe financial supervisory authority
die Einlagensicherungthe deposit guarantee

German banks must record investment advice in a written protocol which the customer receives, and consumer credit carries a fourteen-day right of withdrawal. If a complaint cannot be resolved by the bank, an ombudsman scheme is available, and deposits are protected up to one hundred thousand euros per customer.

Der Zahlungsverkehr mit dem Ausland

German termEnglish meaning
die Auslandsueberweisungthe international transfer
die Fremdwaehrungthe foreign currency
der Wechselkursthe exchange rate
der Auslandsauftragthe international payment order
die Gebuehrthe fee
die SEPA-Ueberweisungthe transfer within the euro area
das SWIFT-Verfahrenthe international messaging network
der Empfaengerthe beneficiary

A transfer within the euro area is priced like a domestic one, because the single payments area treats it as such, while a transfer into another currency is a different transaction with a different cost. The exchange rate applied on the day is the figure the customer notices.

An international order needs more than an account number: the beneficiary's name and address, the bank's identification code and often a purpose of payment are all required. Missing details cause the payment to be returned, and the return costs more than the original transfer.

Customers frequently ask who sets the rate, and the honest answer is that the bank buys currency in the market and applies a margin. Explaining that margin plainly, before the transfer is made, prevents the complaint that otherwise follows the statement. To work in a German bank, learn German with the account, payment and credit vocabulary, and the advice formulas that go with it.

The bars show the order of the stages; each value is a sequence number rather than a duration.

Working in a German Bank

German banks recruit customer advisers, service staff and processing specialists, and a banking qualification is valued but not always required for a service role. Language matters more than usual, because the Beratungsprotokoll must be written precisely.

The product vocabulary is fixed and the regulated sentences are reusable, which makes the job approachable for a strong learner. If you want to learn German for banking work, the account, payment and credit vocabulary is the practical place to start.
