A Dutch verpleeghuis is not simply a home for older people. It is a care institution for people whose needs are too heavy to be met at home, and it sits under the long-term care act, the Wet langdurige zorg, rather than under the health insurance act. Admission requires an indication from the CIZ, the national assessment centre, and that indication names a care profile rather than a diagnosis.
That administrative gatekeeping shapes the daily language. Nobody arrives in a verpleeghuis by accident, and the words on the ward are largely about what has been agreed, who has decided, and what is written in the plan.
The Building and the People
| Dutch term | English meaning |
|---|---|
| de afdeling | the ward |
| het zorgleefplan | the care-and-life plan |
| de verzorgende IG | the qualified care worker |
| de verpleegkundige | the registered nurse |
| de specialist ouderengeneeskunde | the elderly-care physician |
| de activiteitenbegeleider | the activity supervisor |
| de geestelijk verzorger | the spiritual counsellor |
| de eerstverantwoordelijke | the named responsible carer |
Every resident has an eerstverantwoordelijke, a named carer who holds the relationship with the family, and the role is central enough to appear on the ward noticeboard.
The Care Profile and the Indication
| Dutch term | English meaning |
|---|---|
| de Wlz-indicatie | the long-term care indication |
| het zorgprofiel | the care profile |
| de zorgzwaarte | the weight of care |
| het CIZ | the national assessment centre |
| de intake | the admission conversation |
| de overdracht | the handover |
| de herindicatie | the reassessment |
| het zorgdossier | the care record |
The indication is reassessed whenever needs change, and the word herindicatie is used on the ward as a normal part of planning rather than as a threat.
Daily Care and Its Verbs
| Dutch term | English meaning |
|---|---|
| de transfers | moving a resident between bed and chair |
| de tilhulp | the lifting aid |
| de wondzorg | wound care |
| de steunkousen | compression stockings |
| de maaltijdzorg | help with meals |
| de mondzorg | mouth care |
| de continentiezorg | continence care |
| de nachtdienst | the night shift |
Mondzorg is the task most often underestimated by newcomers and most often inspected, because it is written into the care plan and has a direct effect on health.
The Care Plan and Its Reviews
| Dutch term | English meaning |
|---|---|
| het zorgleefplan | the care-and-life plan |
| de zorgdoelen | the care goals |
| de afspraken | the agreements made |
| de evaluatiedatum | the review date |
| de rapportage | the daily reporting |
| de zorgvraag | the care need |
| de wensen | the resident's wishes |
| de bijstelling | the adjustment of the plan |
The plan is called a care-and-life plan rather than a care plan because Dutch policy insists that living, and not only care, is described in it. A resident who used to play cards on Wednesdays has that written down as a goal, and the activity supervisor works from the same document as the nurse.
The House Rules and Everyday Words
| Dutch term | English meaning |
|---|---|
| de huisregels | the house rules |
| de bezoekuren | the visiting hours |
| het koffie-uur | the coffee round |
| de kapper | the visiting hairdresser |
| de pedicure | the visiting chiropodist |
| de maaltijdkeuze | the meal choice |
| de cliëntenraad | the residents' council |
| de nieuwsbrief | the family newsletter |
Every Dutch care organisation has a cliëntenraad, a residents' council with a statutory right to be consulted on matters affecting daily life, from meal times to visiting hours. Mentioning it to a resident is part of the job rather than an optional courtesy, and the words for it are used constantly.
Reporting, Handover and the Words for Time
| Dutch term | English meaning |
|---|---|
| de dagrapportage | the daily report |
| de avondrapportage | the evening report |
| de overdracht aan de volgende dienst | the handover to the next shift |
| het aandachtspunt | the point to watch |
| de bijzonderheden | anything noteworthy |
| de nachtrapportage | the night report |
| de afwijking | the deviation from the plan |
| de opvolging | the follow-up |
The handover in a Dutch ward is written before it is spoken, and the two words that structure it are aandachtspunten and bijzonderheden: what needs watching, and what was unusual. Sorting a shift into those two lists is most of what a good rapportage amounts to.
Quality and Inspection on the Ward
| Dutch term | English meaning |
|---|---|
| het kwaliteitskader | the quality framework |
| de inspectie | the health and youth care inspectorate |
| de zelfevaluatie | the self-assessment |
| het rapportcijfer | the residents' satisfaction score |
| de cliëntervaringsmeting | the client experience survey |
| het verbeterplan | the improvement plan |
| de interne audit | the internal audit |
| de kwaliteitsverpleegkundige | the quality nurse |
Since 2017 Dutch nursing homes have worked to a national quality framework, and every location publishes a self-assessment alongside the score its residents give it. Those words appear in a ward meeting at least as often as clinical terms do.
Freedom, Safety and the Wzd
| Dutch term | English meaning |
|---|---|
| de Wet zorg en dwang | the care and compulsion act |
| de onvrijwillige zorg | involuntary care |
| het stappenplan | the mandatory step-by-step plan |
| de vrijheidsbeperkende maatregel | a freedom-restricting measure |
| de cliëntenvertrouwenspersoon | the independent client confidant |
| de wettencommissie | the internal review committee |
| de deskundige | the independent expert |
| de evaluatie | the scheduled review of the measure |
Since 2020 the Wzd has governed measures such as a locked door or a bed rail in Dutch long-term care, and it requires a defined sequence of steps before any of them is used. The cliëntenvertrouwenspersoon is free, independent, and exists precisely to be called.
Meals, Day Structure and Family Contact
| Dutch term | English meaning |
|---|---|
| de warme maaltijd | the hot meal |
| het dagritme | the daily rhythm |
| de dagbesteding | the day activity programme |
| de familieavond | the relatives' meeting |
| het multidisciplinair overleg | the multidisciplinary meeting |
| de zorgplanbespreking | the care plan review |
| het bezoekuur | visiting hours |
| de uitnodiging | the invitation to the review |
The MDO, the multidisciplinary meeting, is where the plan is actually changed, and relatives are invited rather than informed. Being able to explain a plan in plain Dutch at that meeting is one of the fastest ways for a colleague from abroad to be trusted.
Getting Work in a Verpleeghuis
The standard qualification is verzorgende IG at niveau 3, or verpleegkunde at niveau 4 and above, and the nursing roles are entered in the BIG register. Dutch is required, and most organisations test it before you work a shift alone.
Interviews usually include a Wzd scenario: a resident with dementia wants to leave the ward and the door is locked. Your answer is judged on the stappenplan rather than on the outcome. If you want to learn Dutch for this setting, learn the plan vocabulary first, because in a Dutch nursing home the plan is the argument.
The bars show the order of the process from referral to ward; the values are sequence numbers, not durations.
Why the Words Matter Here
A verpleeghuis is document-heavy in a way that surprises people who have worked in other settings. Almost every decision is recorded before it is taken and reviewed afterwards, which means the language of the plan is not administrative decoration but the working language of the ward. If you want to learn Dutch for a verpleeghuis ward, build the care-plan and Wzd vocabulary before your first shift.
Dutch nursing homes work from the plan. Learn Dutch with the zorgleefplan, the Wzd steps and ward vocabulary built into the course.
