Dutch for Training and Apprenticeships (Opleiding en Stage) - Courses, Certificates and Funding

The Netherlands trains its workforce through a combination of school and workplace, and the system is open to newcomers. A beroepsopleiding mixes a college with a leerbedrijf, while bijscholing is often funded and can be done alongside a job.

The vocabulary of training is precise: an opleiding, a cursus and a stage are not the same thing, and the difference decides who pays and what the certificate is worth.

The Words of Training

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de opleidingthe vocational training
de bijscholingthe further training
de nascholingthe refresher training
de omscholingthe retraining
de cursusthe course
het seminarthe seminar
het certificaatthe certificate
het diplomathe qualification

An opleiding is a full vocational training, usually lasting three or four years, while bijscholing extends what you already do. Omscholing is a complete retraining for a new occupation, and it is often funded through the employment agency or the UWV.

The Vocational Route

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de beroepsopleidingthe vocational programme
de leerwerkovereenkomstthe work-study agreement
het leerbedrijfthe approved training company
de praktijkopleiderthe workplace trainer
de vakopleidingthe trade qualification
het stagebedrijfthe internship company
het einddiplomathe final diploma
het SBBthe body that approves training companies

The beroepsbegeleidende leerweg sends a student to the leerbedrijf for several days a week and to college for the rest, over three or four years. The SBB approves the companies, and a completed vakopleiding is recognised throughout the country.

Courses and Certificates

Some occupations require a bewijs van vakbekwaamheid before you may work at all, from fork lifts to hazardous goods and security. A deelnamebewijs proves that you attended, while an examen proves that you passed, and Dutch employers know the difference.

Funding and Support

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de subsidiethe subsidy
het levenlanglerenkredietthe lifelong learning loan
het UWVthe benefits agency
de toelagethe allowance
de vergoedingthe reimbursement
de kostenthe cost
de vrijstellingthe exemption
de onkostenthe expenses

The UWV can fund a course when a qualification is needed to find work, and employers often pay directly for training that benefits the team. Several schemes also cover travel and study costs, and many courses can be followed part-time.

Learning on the Job

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de inwerkperiodethe induction
de begeleidingthe guidance
de buddythe workplace mentor
de overdrachtthe handover of the task
de verantwoordelijkheidthe responsibility
de feedbackthe feedback
de tussentijdse toetsthe interim assessment
de doelafspraakthe agreed objective

Most Dutch firms keep a written inwerkplan, and each new task is handed over formally rather than discovered. Asking for a doelafspraak in writing is normal and makes the assessment at the end of the period predictable.

Language Courses at Work

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de taalcursusthe language course
het niveauthe level
de niveautestthe placement test
het cursusroosterthe course schedule
de deelnamethe participation
de aanwezigheidthe attendance
het huiswerkthe homework
de taalpraktijkthe language practice

Employers in care, logistics and hospitality often arrange or fund a Dutch course for new staff, because the language is the last barrier to full deployment. A placement test places you at a level from A1 to C1, and the attendance record matters.

Applying for Training

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de aanmeldingthe registration
de voorwaardethe prerequisite
de inschrijftermijnthe application deadline
de kostenthe cost
de duurthe duration
de werkgeversbijdragethe employer's contribution
de bevestigingthe confirmation
de startdatumthe start date

Registration for a funded course runs through the UWV or the college, and a place is confirmed in writing. A short written request to your employer for the werkgeversbijdrage, naming the qualification and the benefit to the team, is usually enough.

Recognising a Foreign Qualification

Dutch termEnglish meaning
------
de erkenningthe recognition
de gelijkwaardigheidthe equivalence
de diplomawaarderingthe evaluation of the diploma
de aanvraagthe application
het BIG-registerthe register of health professionals
de taaleisthe language requirement
de beroepservaringthe professional experience
de kostenthe costs

In the Netherlands a foreign diploma is assessed for equivalence rather than converted into a Dutch one. Nuffic, the international education body, issues a diplomawaardering that states what your qualification is worth at Dutch level.

Some professions are regulated and need an official registration. Health care is the strictest example: without a BIG registration you may not work as a nurse, a doctor or a physiotherapist, however long your experience abroad.

Regulated occupations also carry a language requirement, usually Dutch at level B2 and sometimes C1, proved by a state examination or an official test of Dutch as a second language.

The application goes to the competent ministry or register, runs alongside a fee and can take several months. Use the waiting time to sit the language test, because the certificate is needed before the registration is granted.

Once the registration is in place, the pay scales in health care and education open up, and the qualification can be carried to another employer without being reassessed.

Keep the evaluation letter and the language certificate together, because every new employer asks for both before the contract is signed. To meet the language requirement that stands between you and formal registration, learn Dutch with lessons aimed at level B2 and beyond.

The bars show the order of the stages; each value is a sequence number rather than a duration.

Training in the Netherlands

Training is the main route into a Dutch career, and the language of the training system is the price of admission. Once you can name the qualification and the funding route, the rest is paperwork and patience.

A diploma earned in the Netherlands is portable, recognised and permanent. If you want to learn Dutch for your career, the vocabulary of training and qualifications is what turns a job into a profession.

Dutch training is dual, certified and often funded. Learn Dutch with course, apprenticeship and funding language built into the course.

Put your Dutch to work. The LanguageSkills Dutch course is self-paced and built around real situations like these — you speak, and your AI tutor corrects you on the spot, from A1 to B2.
