Dutch for the Bank Account and Money (Bankzaken en Geld) - Opening, Transfers and Cards

In the Netherlands money moves by card and by phone. Cash is still accepted, but plenty of places prefer a pinbetaling, and your salary, rent, insurance and allowances all pass through one Dutch bank account.

The vocabulary is short, and once you can read a Dutch bank statement the rest of the paperwork becomes much less intimidating.

The Words of Banking

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de rekeningthe account
de bankthe bank
het kantoorthe branch
de geldautomaatthe cash machine
de overschrijvingthe transfer
de automatische incassothe direct debit
het afschriftthe statement
het saldothe balance

Two movements dominate a Dutch statement: the overschrijving, money you send, and the automatische incasso, money a company collects with your permission. Both are reversible within a short period if something goes wrong.

Opening an Account

Dutch termEnglish meaning
het identiteitsbewijsthe identity document
het BSNthe citizen service number
het adresthe address
de kostenthe costs
de betaalrekeningthe current account
de handtekeningthe signature
het pincodethe PIN
de DigiDthe digital identity

A Dutch bank account needs an identity document, a Dutch address and a citizen service number, so open the account after you register with the gemeente. Many banks charge a small monthly fee for the current account and a little more for a card.

Cards and Payments

Almost every payment is made by card, and contactless is the default. Choose a PIN you can type without thinking, and save the blocking number in your phone so that a lost card can be stopped within minutes.

Transfers and Direct Debits

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de begunstigdethe recipient
het IBANthe international account number
de BICthe international bank code
de omschrijvingthe payment reference
de automatische incassothe direct debit
de storneringthe reversal of a debit
de periodieke overschrijvingthe standing order
de betaalverzoekthe payment request

Dutch banking runs on payment requests and direct debits rather than cheques, and a request sent through the banking app settles in seconds. Write a clear omschrijving on every transfer, because it is the only proof of what the payment was for.

Getting Paid

Dutch termEnglish meaning
het salaristhe salary
het loonthe wage
het nettobedragthe net amount
de bijschrijvingthe credit to the account
de betaaldagthe payday
de loonstrookthe payslip
de werkgeverthe employer
de eindafrekeningthe final settlement

Most Dutch employers pay once a month, often around the twenty-fourth or the last working day, and holiday pay arrives separately in May or June. Keep every loonstrook, because the UWV asks for them when a contract ends.

Fees, Credit and Debt

Dutch termEnglish meaning
het rood staanthe overdraft
de rentethe interest
de leningthe loan
de termijnenthe instalments
de aanmaningthe reminder letter
het BKRthe national credit register
de deurwaarderthe bailiff
het adviesthe advice

Overdraft interest in the Netherlands is high, and a missed payment is registered with the BKR, which affects every later loan, mortgage or phone contract. A reminder letter should be answered the same week, not at the end of the month.

Money and the State

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de Belastingdienstthe tax office
de belastingaangiftethe tax return
de heffingskortingthe tax credit
de kinderbijslagthe child benefit
de toeslagenthe allowances
de AOWthe state pension
de aanvraagthe application
de bevestigingthe confirmation

Tax returns are filed digitally, usually in the spring, and most employees receive something back. Allowances for rent, health care and childcare must be applied for actively; they do not arrive on their own.

Phrases at the Bank

Dutch phraseWhat it means
Ik wil een rekening openen.I would like to open an account.
Wat zijn de kosten per maand? What are the monthly costs?
Ik ben mijn pas kwijt.I have lost my card.
Wilt u mijn pas blokkeren?Would you block my card?

Is de betaling al binnen?Has the payment arrived yet?

Kunt u dat uitleggen?Could you explain that?

Banking vocabulary repeats every single month, which makes it one of the most rewarding sets of words to learn early.

Choosing a Bank and a Branch

The Netherlands has a small number of large banks and a few digital newcomers, and they all offer a similar current account with an app, a card and a monthly fee.

Compare the monthly cost, the number of free withdrawals abroad and the interest on a positive balance, because the differences are modest but they add up over a year.

A Dutch bank will want your citizen service number and a Dutch address, which is why the account is opened after the registration with the gemeente.

You can open the account in a branch or online with a video identification, and the card usually arrives by post within a few working days.

Once the account works, arrange the rent, the energy and the insurance as automatic debits, so that nothing depends on you remembering a date.

The bank also issues the payment requests you will use to pay friends, landlords and tradespeople, and those settle within seconds during banking hours.

If you leave the country, keep the account open until the final settlement, the last tax return and the pension letters are all complete. To manage your own account, allowances and official letters in Dutch, learn Dutch with a course built around real daily paperwork.

The bars show the order of the stages; each value is a sequence number rather than a duration.
