Leaving a Dutch job is a formal act, and the way it is done is remembered long after the last payslip. Handled well, the departure costs a fortnight of politeness and leaves you with a reference and a network.
The vocabulary of resignation is small but exact, from the notice period to the handing back of keys. Learning it means you leave on your own terms and with the paperwork in order.
The Words of Leaving
| Dutch term | English meaning |
|---|---|
| het ontslag | the resignation or dismissal |
| de beëindigingsovereenkomst | the termination agreement |
| de opzegtermijn | the notice period |
| de vrijstelling van werk | the release from work |
| de laatste werkdag | the last working day |
| de overdracht | the handover |
| het getuigschrift | the employment reference |
| het afscheid | the farewell |
Two routes end a Dutch employment: your own opzegging, and a mutual beëindigingsovereenkomst. The second can be quicker and can include a payment, but it should never be signed without reading what it gives up.
Giving Notice Correctly
| Dutch term | English meaning |
|---|---|
| de schriftelijke opzegging | the written notice |
| de schriftelijke vorm | the written form requirement |
| de ontvangst | the receipt of the notice |
| het einde van de maand | the end of the month |
| de opzegging door de werkgever | the dismissal by the employer |
| de ontslagprocedure | the dismissal procedure |
| de ondernemingsraad | the works council |
| de onderbouwing | the reason |
A Dutch resignation must be in writing, and notice usually runs from the first of the following month with a period that grows with service. An employer normally needs the consent of the benefits agency or a court before dismissing an employee.
Release and Handover
| Dutch term | English meaning |
|---|---|
| de doorbetaalde vrijstelling | the paid release |
| de overdracht van taken | the handover of duties |
| de documentatie | the documentation |
| de sleutels | the keys |
| de toegang | the access |
| de privacy | the data protection |
| de afmelding | the removal from the systems |
| de teruggave | the return of equipment |
A firm may release you from work during the notice period while continuing to pay, which is common in sales and in management roles. The overdracht is documented, and returning keys, cards and equipment is confirmed in writing.
The Employment Reference
| Dutch term | English meaning |
|---|---|
| het getuigschrift | the employment reference |
| de arbeidsverklaring | the statement of employment |
| de beoordeling | the assessment |
| de formulering | the wording |
| de welwillendheid | the goodwill |
| de correctie | the correction |
| de aanspraak | the entitlement |
| de referentie | the reference person |
Dutch law does not give every employee an automatic right to a detailed reference, so a getuigschrift is usually brief and factual. In practice most employers provide a short statement of duties and dates, and a referee by telephone does the rest.
Content of a Dutch Reference
| Dutch term | English meaning |
|---|---|
| de taakomschrijving | the description of duties |
| de prestatiebeoordeling | the performance assessment |
| de gedragsbeoordeling | the conduct assessment |
| de dankformule | the formula of thanks |
| de slotformule | the closing formula |
| het eindoordeel | the final assessment |
| de datum | the date |
| de ondertekening | the signature |
A Dutch reference is plain rather than coded, and it names the period, the role and the reason for leaving. A short positive sentence at the end is normal, and an unusually warm one is not required to make the document useful.
Counting the Days and the Money
| Dutch term | English meaning |
|---|---|
| het vakantietegoed | the holiday entitlement |
| de uitbetaling van vakantiedagen | the payment in lieu of leave |
| de eindafrekening | the final statement |
| de laatste loonstrook | the final payslip |
| de eindejaarsuitkering | the year-end payment |
| de terugvordering | the recovery of an overpayment |
| de termijn | the deadline |
| de verrekening | the settlement |
Remaining holiday that cannot be taken is paid in lieu at the end of the employment. A bonus already paid may be reclaimed in proportion if the contract allows it, so the final loonstrook deserves the same attention as the first.
Leaving Well
| Dutch term | English meaning |
|---|---|
| het eindgesprek | the exit interview |
| het netwerk | the network |
| de aanbeveling | the recommendation |
| de referentie | the reference person |
| het contact houden | the keeping in touch |
| het afscheidscadeau | the leaving present |
| de formaliteit | the formality |
| de waardering | the appreciation |
Dutch careers are long and industries are small, so leaving well is an investment rather than a courtesy. A short farewell message, a clean handover and a reference person who remembers you kindly are worth more than any argument won in the last week.
Your Final Payslip and Papers
| Dutch term | English meaning |
|---|---|
| --- | --- |
| de eindafrekening | the final settlement |
| de transitievergoeding | the transition payment |
| het getuigschrift | the reference |
| de werkgeversverklaring | the employer's statement |
| het vakantiegeld | the holiday pay |
| de afmelding | the deregistration |
| de pensioenoverzicht | the pension statement |
| de loonstrook | the payslip |
When a Dutch employment ends, the employer produces an eindafrekening, a final settlement that shows the last wage, the unused holiday days, the holiday pay still owed and any transition payment.
The transitievergoeding has been due on dismissal and on the ending of a fixed contract that is not renewed since 2015. It starts at a third of a month's wage for the first year of service and grows with the length of the employment.
A getuigschrift is issued on request, and it must describe the work and the manner in which it was carried out; the employer may not write anything that damages your chances of finding new work.
To claim a WW benefit you need a werkgeversverklaring, and the claim must reach the UWV within the deadline. The agency will then ask for the payslips covering the whole employment.
Pension money built up in the old scheme stays with the fund, and a pension statement tells you which fund holds it and how to find it again.
Keep the final settlement, the reference and the pension statement together with your contract, and the next employer sees a clean, complete file. To read your own eindafrekening and discuss it confidently, learn Dutch with a course that follows the Dutch employment system.
The bars show the order of the stages; each value is a sequence number rather than a duration.
Resigning in the Netherlands
A Dutch departure is a procedure, and every step of it is written down. Knowing the words for notice, handover and reference means you neither lose money nor lose a network.
The impression you leave behind is the one a future employer will hear about, which is why the last weeks deserve more care than the first. If you want to learn Dutch for work, the language of resignation and references is short, formal and worth mastering exactly.
A Dutch resignation is written, timed and closed with a handover. Learn Dutch with notice, handover and reference language built into the course.
