Dutch for Public Transport and Commuting (Openbaar vervoer en woon-werkverkeer) - Tickets, Timetables and Delays

The Netherlands has one of the densest public transport networks in Europe, and almost all of it runs on a single card. Trains, trams, metros and buses share the same check-in system, and the same Dutch words appear on every journey.

Commuting here is normal, quick and usually done by bicycle at one end and by train at the other, so the vocabulary of the journey belongs in your first month.

The Words of Travel

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de treinthe train
de metrothe underground
de tramthe tram
de busthe bus
de haltethe stop
het stationthe station
de dienstregelingthe timetable
het spoorthe track

Dutch stations are compact, and the same platform number serves both directions, so read the signs above the track carefully. The abbreviation for the central station is Centraal, and it is usually the busiest point in the city.

Buying a Ticket

Dutch termEnglish meaning
het kaartjethe ticket
de automaatthe ticket machine
de OV-chipkaartthe public transport card
incheckenthe check-in
uitcheckenthe check-out
het abonnementthe season ticket
de conducteurthe conductor
de boetethe fine

You must check in at the start of a journey and check out at the end, even when no one is watching, because a missed check-out charges the maximum fare. The personal OV-chipkaart also carries a season ticket or a discount subscription.

Reading the Timetable

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de vertrektijdthe departure time
de aankomsttijdthe arrival time
het perronthe platform
de overstapthe change of trains
de overstaptijdthe transfer time
de vertragingthe delay
de uitvalthe cancellation
het werk aan het spoorthe engineering works

Dutch timetables are built on tight connections, and a five-minute change at a major station is intended to work. When something fails, the operator's app shows the alternative route before the platform staff can announce it.

Delays, Cancellations and Refunds

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de vergoedingthe compensation
het vervangend vervoerthe replacement transport
de reizigerthe traveller
de claimthe claim
de regelingthe scheme
de NSthe national rail operator
de reisplannerthe journey planner
de bevestigingthe confirmation

For a delay of half an hour or more on the main rail network you can claim part of your fare back through the operator's website. Keep the ticket or the card record, and submit the claim within the stated period.

The Commute and Your Employer

Dutch termEnglish meaning
het woon-werkverkeerthe commute
de reistijdthe travel time
de reiskostenvergoedingthe travel allowance
de thuiswerkregelingthe working-from-home rule
de flexibele werktijdenthe flexible working hours
de spitsthe rush hour
de reisafstandthe travel distance
het reisbeleidthe travel policy

Many Dutch employers pay a fixed amount per kilometre travelled, and since 2015 the tax-free allowance has been extended to cover cycling as well as driving. Ask the personnel office what your contract allows, because the schemes differ from company to company.

Riding Safely and Politely

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de zitplaatsthe seat
de staanplaatsthe standing place
de stiltecoupethe quiet carriage
de voorrangthe priority
in- en uitstappenboarding and alighting
de nooduitgangthe emergency exit
het toezichtthe supervision
het vervoer van fietsenthe carriage of bicycles

The quiet carriage is respected seriously, and letting passengers leave before you board is expected rather than optional. A bicycle needs a separate day ticket on the train, and full trains are closed to bikes in the rush hour.

Bicycles and Cars

Dutch termEnglish meaning
de fietsthe bicycle
het fietspadthe cycle path
de fietsenstallingthe bicycle park
de autothe car
het rijbewijsthe driving licence
de milieuzonethe environmental zone
de parkeergaragethe multi-storey car park
de parkeerkostenthe parking costs

Most Dutch commuters cycle to the station and take the train from there, and secure bicycle parking is free at nearly every station. A few city centres operate an environmental zone, so check the rules before driving an older car into the middle of town.

Phrases on the Train

Dutch phraseWhat it means
Hoe laat vertrekt de trein? What time does the train leave?
Van welk perron?From which platform?
Moet ik overstappen?Do I have to change?
Is deze plek vrij?Is this seat free?
Ik wil een dagkaart.I would like a day ticket.
De trein heeft vertraging. The train is delayed.
Waar moet ik uitstappen?Where do I have to get off?
Bedankt voor de informatie.Thank you for the information.

Announcements in Dutch stations are short and spoken quickly, so knowing the six or seven key words is worth more than a large vocabulary you cannot catch in time.

Reading the Signs and the Machine

Every platform carries a direction and a destination, and in the Netherlands one track often serves both, so read the signs above the rails carefully before you board.

The fare depends on the distance travelled between check-in and check-out, which is precisely why the two touches are not optional.

If you forget to check out, the system charges the maximum fare, and the difference can be reclaimed from the operator with a short online form.

Season tickets and discount subscriptions are loaded onto a personal card, and several of them pay for themselves after a few return journeys.

The journey planner gives the platform, the transfer and the walking time together, and it updates faster than the signs on the station.

Keep the card away from your phone, since holding both against the reader can register the wrong card and produce a failed check-in.

A bicycle on the train needs a separate ticket, and in the rush hour it is not allowed at all, so plan that combination before you rely on it. To check in, transfer and claim a refund in Dutch, learn Dutch with a course that follows the daily commute.

The bars show the order of the stages; each value is a sequence number rather than a duration.
