telc Deutsch A2 — the A2 test the German vocational and care-worker pipeline trusts

Both certify the same CEFR A2 level and are mutually recognised by German authorities. The flavour, however, is different: Goethe A2 leans academic and cultural (Fit in Deutsch-style themes), while telc A2 leans workplace and public-services — Wegbeschreibungen, Krankmeldungen, Arzttermine, Behördengänge. If your goal is Ausbildung, Pflegehelfer/in onboarding, or a junior care-worker visa, telc A2 is the test the pipeline is built around.

telc A2 is the standard A2 proof for: Ausbildung visa (vocational training pathway, §16a AufenthG), junior care-worker / Pflegehelfer/in routes, family reunification to a spouse already in Germany (§30 AufenthG), and as the renewal threshold for some permanent residence categories. Full work-permit categories still require B1 or B2.

For most Pflegehelfer/in (1-year nursing assistant) Ausbildung programmes, telc A2 is the formal entry requirement, with the school typically requiring B1 by the end of year one. For 3-year skilled Ausbildung (Pflegefachmann/frau, mechatronics, hospitality), schools generally expect B1 at intake — telc A2 is the stepping stone, not the destination.

telc allows unlimited retakes and — importantly — you can retake only the modules you failed within one year, at most telc centres. So if you clear Hörverstehen, Leseverstehen and Sprechen but miss Schreiben, you only re-sit Schreiben. Each module needs 60% to pass.

telc itself recommends roughly 200-350 guided learning hours from zero. Most candidates with a structured course and our mock-driven prep clear in 150-200 hours of focused work over 3-5 months. Daily 60-90 minute sessions with weekly full mocks is the pattern that works.

The Sprechen module is a paired exam (~15 minutes for two candidates together). Three parts: (1) Sich vorstellen — introduce yourself, (2) Über sich und das eigene Leben sprechen — answer questions from your partner on everyday topics, (3) Etwas gemeinsam planen — plan something together (a trip, a party, a meeting). Examiners score pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary and task fulfilment.

The certificate itself never expires. However, German immigration authorities (Ausländerbehörde) and most employers treat language certificates older than 2 years with caution and may ask for a recent one. For visa applications, plan to sit the exam within 12-18 months of submission.
