Cheaper than Goethe

telc C1 Hochschule typically costs noticeably less than Goethe-Zertifikat C1 at most centres — same university acceptance, lower fee.

Every public German university accepts it for Bachelor's + Master's admission. Also valid for Studienkolleg and §16b study visa.

Frequently asked

The most asked telc C1 Hochschule questions

telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule vs TestDaF vs DSH — which should I take?+
All three are accepted at German public universities for academic admission. TestDaF requires you to score TDN 4 in each of the 4 sections (a single TDN 3 can sink the whole application). DSH is university-specific, only offered onsite, and harder to schedule from abroad. telc C1 Hochschule is single-day, transparently graded (you see your +/− per skill), offered year-round at licensed centres worldwide, and only needs 60% combined with ≥50% per skill — making it the most predictable route for most applicants.
Which German universities accept telc C1 Hochschule?+
Every public German Hochschule and Universität accepts it as proof of C1 academic German for Bachelor's and Master's admission — including LMU Munich, TU Berlin, Heidelberg, RWTH Aachen, Humboldt, Tübingen, Freiburg and the entire TU9 group. It also satisfies the language requirement of the Studienkolleg entrance test. A small number of medical faculties additionally require DSH-3, so always confirm with your target programme's Akademisches Auslandsamt.
What is the retake policy?+
There is no waiting period and no statutory cap on attempts. Crucially, telc lets you retake only the modules you failed — if you cleared Schreiben and Sprechen but fell short on Hörverstehen, you re-sit just that module (within one year of your first attempt at the same centre). This per-module retake is the single biggest practical advantage telc has over TestDaF.
How many study hours from B2 to C1?+
Most learners need 600-750 guided learning hours on top of a solid B2 to reach C1 Hochschule level — typically 4-8 months of intensive study or 9-14 months part-time. Expect heavy emphasis on academic register, nominalisation, complex connectors and the ability to summarise + argue from dense source texts. Our diagnostic shows you which of these sub-skills are below the 50% module floor.
What is the oral 'Vortrag + Diskussion' format?+
The Sprechen module is ~16 min preparation + ~24 min live exam, taken in pairs. Part 1: a structured 8-minute Vortrag (presentation) on a topic of your choice from a list — you must define the topic, present arguments, give examples and conclude. Part 2: a 5-min discussion with your partner on a controversial statement, defending opposing positions. Part 3: a short negotiation task. Two examiners score on Ausdrucksfähigkeit, Aufgabenbewältigung and Korrektheit.
Does the certificate expire?+
No. Once issued, the telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule certificate is valid for life — universities and the Bundesagentur für Arbeit accept it without an expiry date. (TestDaF and Goethe-Zertifikat C1 are also lifetime-valid, but individual employers or visa officers occasionally request a certificate not older than 2 years — that is policy, not a telc rule.)
How is C1 Hochschule different from the general telc C1?+
telc Deutsch C1 (general) is calibrated to professional and everyday C1. telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule is calibrated specifically to academic German — texts come from university lectures and journal articles, the Schreiben prompt is a 'wissenschaftlicher Aufsatz', and the Vortrag has to be argued academically. Only the Hochschule variant is accepted for German university admission. If your goal is study or a research visa, take the Hochschule version — not the general C1.
